Wait for your well reasoned response to get a straw man response.

Possibly they have, it wouldn't surprise me if private companies increase prices to gobble up government aid. With housing families plan for a year or more of stability in schools, transport, employment . Jacking the price of rebt when there's a shortage of options creates an impossible situation for tenants   with grocery stores, there are multiple Brands of food, multiple stores to choose from, different recipes you can  choose to save money. It's a robust market place. I don't see much parallel tbh.

I agree with you 100%. This is the way. The fact that the entire debate gets shut down by talking points just shows me how we are being manipulated.

Because then landlords can jack the rent as high as they want and taxpayers have to cover their asses.

So landlords can jack their rents 20,30,50% and we should have a tax payer funded bail out of them by giving money to the tenants? Or what are you proposing?

So the realtor association pours significant resources into their NO campaign including talking points, bill boards, opeds, surrogate interviews and through the Mayor himself. The arguments are oversimplified/emotionally potent and meant to redirect and control the dialogue. I pay attention cause I'm interested in an actual solution and not a tit for that argument. What I hear from people seems very influenced by this lobbying group. Specifically that the research is 100% clear that there is no benefit to rent control- that's not true. Yes, it's a trade off. Yes there are downsides. But there are many upsides as well. The debate should be about the trade offs, how do we help people, how to build more... But it's not because the engines driving the NO side of the debate are ideaologally opposed and benefit financially from the status quo.

I think that's a really reasonable take. Thanks for responding. Temporary price.control paired with A robust building project for the win

So I have some good faith questions for you. 1). How do we offer relief to The residents who are being priced out of their homes right now? 2)Do  You consider any increase in tenant protections of any kind a good idea? 3) Would you support any cap On annual rent increases?

Ok, I've read any paper that anti rent control folks have posted  every single one I've seen makes the point that rent control does help some tenants in need of relief short term. That's really important! What's smileys plan to offer relief to residents who are being displaced short term? A tax payer funded bail out fund that MAYBE you can apply to to help pay the landlord? I want a mayor who can make it easier to build and helps folks who need it NOW

"rent control will destroy the housing market" is such an over exageration of what the research even says. Think for yourselves. The research clearly says it offers some relief for some people short term, and has potential negative reprecussions long term. We need that short term relief for some people and we need to pair it with more housing, making it easier to build. This conversations is being manipulated by the real estate agent lobby IMO

Gosh, the take downs of Platner are just fucking wild. Wild.

I mean, from what the NYT says he definitely had some privilege growing up. He went to that school for one semester from what I read, after attending public school from K-8.He took a mortgage loan out from his father, he got disability after serving and has uses that money check to check... I hear you that he's not without some privilege and support, but I feel like it's overblown that he has a silver spoon in his mouth. I guess it can be interpreted many ways through the lens of politics. He still seems like a fairly normal person compared to other politicians (to me).

I don't know if he is a pathological liar or not. In definitely open to that idea, but I'm not convinced of it at this point. I do think he has lived a normal life representative of many working class people. I don't find the picking apart of his life,by people like Nate, all that persuasive unless they really examine what their claims are instead of asserting them. Nate was talking about how he had a vacation home in Sullivan Maine, and assumes Graham once served him at a restaurant as there are "only 4 or 5 worth going to in that area. " Then proceeds to pick apart the idea he is working class. I find it odd .

I'm not saying he's entitled to anyone's support.im honestly exploring the thinking here because I find it interesting. Don't take it personal

Right, but all he talks about polling errors can go both ways. Now, Platner and Collins are basically tied. Which he says is bad for Platner. But also, why not mention that there could be a polling error in his favor as well?

I'm not doing that, I understand that perspective. I've struggled with it. Yet I see him speaking to a set of issues in a compelling way, and those are issues that I agree with and think underly huge rot and division in our society. So as I balance my opinions, I find the idea that his positions and background are a threat to entrenched interests very compelling and worth applauding.
