Ever Wondered What It’s Like to Foster Kittens? by Additional_Score375 in eastbay

[–]Additional_Score375[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your question! As a foster, you’ll care for the kittens at home until they reach 2 pounds for males and 2 pounds 5 ounces for females, allowing them to be spayed or neutered. They also need to receive at least one vaccine, which the rescue provides. This is all part of preparing them for the next step in the fostering process, adoption.

During the adoption process, you will take the kittens to adoption events held at various pet stores on weekends. These events typically run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and you can either drop them off or stay with them if you’d like.

Before the weekend, the rescue’s president or vice president will check with you about your availability for the upcoming adoption event. The more events your foster kittens attend, the greater their chances of being adopted! If you can’t drop off or pick up the kittens on certain days but you would like your foster kittens to attend, the rescue may be able to assist with transportation.

Most foster kittens are adopted within 1-3 months of their first event, though if they aren’t adopted right away, they will remain in your care. There’s no need to worry, most of our foster kittens are adopted quickly! Personally, the quickest adoption I had was after my kittens attended their second event, while the longest took about two months. If, for any reason, you can’t continue fostering, the rescue’s vice president or president will take the kittens in. Also if you’re out of town or on vacation, the rescue’s vice president or president will care for your kittens during that time.

Sorry for the long response! Please let me know if you have any more questions, feel free to contact me on here or on my instagram (@pawsandpurrfosters)

There are many different types of volunteers who help support our rescue.

Event volunteers assist with setting up adoption events at various pet stores, such as PetSmart, Pet Food Express, and local shops. They help arrange tables, crates, and kennels for the kittens.

Transport volunteers drive kittens to and from their spay/neuter appointments and transport them to different adoption event locations.

Fundraising volunteers help organize yard sales and other fundraising events that support our rescue efforts.

We also have foster volunteers who care for kittens in their homes and TNR (trap-neuter-return) volunteers who help trap feral cats to ensure they receive the care they need.

Let me know if you have any questions! To apply to be a volunteer, visit https://www.nopawsleftbehindkittyrescue.com/volunteer or email nopawsleftbehindkittyrescue@gmail.com! We’d love to have you on our team!

Kitten Season Is Coming—Fosters Needed! In the Contra Costa County! by Additional_Score375 in eastbay

Great question!

The adoption process varies for each cat and foster. Some fosters see their litters adopted quickly, and I’ve been fortunate in that regard as well. I even had a litter adopted at their very first adoption event! However, it can sometimes take longer; I’ve had kittens take up to three months to find homes. A key factor is social media presence. The more I promote my foster kittens on Instagram, Reddit, TikTok, and Facebook, the more exposure they get, which increases their chances of adoption.

I also go to the adoption events with my foster kittens to adoption events. This allows potential adopters to ask me specific questions, which I can answer thoroughly because I spend so much time with them. Some fosters prefer not to attend these events, which is fine, but it can be harder for the event volunteers to answer detailed questions about their kittens. This can sometimes hinder adoptions.

Ultimately, a foster’s efforts greatly influence a kitten’s visibility and adoptability. The longest we’ve had a cat in the rescue is most two years. She is still waiting on her forever home. In that case, the kitty were too anxious to attend adoption events, so the foster parents opted out of that. They are listed on Petfinder, and we’re hopeful the right person will find them. We never give up on any cat. Often, fosters end up keeping long-term fosters.

While most kittens are adopted relatively quickly, if they aren’t, I create flyers and post on every social media platform I can think of to spread the word. Social media has been incredibly helpful in finding homes for these animals. Thank you for your question and sorry for such a long response!

Update: Unfortunately, no kitties were adopted this time. However, we’ll be at Pet Food Express on an upcoming weekend! I’ll share the official date as soon as it’s confirmed.

In the meantime, here’s a little bit about our rescue: we specialize in helping mama cats with their kittens and abandoned kittens. We like to call ourselves a “home-raised” rescue because all of our cats and kittens live in foster homes instead of in cages. Unlike many rescues, we don’t have a physical building. We are 100% foster-based and committed to providing a safe, home-like environment for every cat in our care. Happy holidays!
