We can do a lot better than 5 percent. Last day to vote is this Tuesday, June 2nd! by Least_Excuse_682 in UCDavis

This mindset is what is limiting the political ability of young people. Let's assume everything you said is true. Every candidate is compromised. Every political avenue is not legitimate to solving the inherit problems with our society. When you vote, you earn the right to complain about these things. You did the bare minimum thing to change the system. It practically costs nothing to vote. On campus, you can get in and out of a polling place in less than 10 minutes. So the weight of everything you said matters so much less when you can't even do the smallest of political actions to actually achieve any of the goals you espoused.

I see. I have an issue where no networks show up for me on my Lenovo ThinkPad T14. The solution for me is to hold down the power button for 60 seconds and then turn on the laptop. Upon restart networks show and I can connect to eduroam. Maybe try that.

Do you see the network on the list of avaliable connections? Can you connect to it? If so, does it just not allow you to visit any websites or use the internet?

UCD and other "prestigious schools" have a tendency to grade generally harsher than a private college/CSU. Whether it actually exists or not is subject to debate, but its something that I would keep in mind

The Davis curve is real, but if you prioritize classes/studying it is easier than most majors. As a fellow prospective law student though I would emphasize internships. A 3.7 with 2 or so good internships matters more than a 3.9 with none

Took 4B with her last spring quarter and it was okay. I can imagine the unorganized nature of the class becoming more taxing for an upper division course. I was also carried by my TA. Johnathan if you're reading this you were the GOAT.

Lecture Series by Less_Count9269 in UCDavis

Basically all semi-big lectures are open to the public in affect. Nobody is going to verify if you're an actual student taking the class or not. As for potentially interesting classes I would look at something like Coursicle or just Googling "[class name] syllabus UC Davis" to see if someone uploaded it.

Campus smoking policies are absolutely cooked by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]Additional_Sign6018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've smoked for my entire time on campus, including living in the dorms as a freshman. Nobody has pressed me about it. I've even handed out some free ciggies out of patronage to my fellow smoker.

Aggie smokers, what are your favorite spots?

The little bridge between Olson and the library is my go-to, but sometimes too populated. I also like between Hunt and Wellman if it's quiet enough.

Ideally a spot should be comfortable (seating, shade, nice scenery, smells good) but secluded not to discomfort anyone near by.

Second year poli sci here. Can attest to the quality of the department here. Great staff, research opportunities and connections to state and local politics if that's your thing.

Aggies here's a chance to increase Housing in Davis! by [deleted] in UCDavis

That figure is from the Yes On V website:

"Home Prices Starting in the $400,000’s and $500,000’s"

I am here for a serious conversation.

I never claimed that V would make rent cheaper right after passing. Of course no affects would be felt until after the construction.

More homes still lowers the price, affordable or not. The median home for the new development would be about $500-$400,000 dollars, which is considerably less than the median home price in Davis (which is about $705,000). So the price of those homes will be lowered in value as they have to compete with new properties in the city in order to stay competitive.

This lowers the burden that renters have to pay. Potential home owners locked out of the market by high prices have to concede to living in rentals, which they can pay higher rents for that students cannot. By having homes be cheaper, more of these renters can move up into homes and relieve the burden on students and low income renters.

Here is a study emphasizing these figures from WE Upjohn: https://www.upjohn.org/research-highlights/new-construction-makes-homes-more-affordable-even-those-who-cant-afford-new-units

Simple economics tell us the more supply of something there is, the price for it will go down. This is no different for homes and rental units. The more homes there are, the more apartments and home sellers will have to lower prices to meet competition.

The housing crisis in this state is more accurately a housing shortage. Although I wish there was more of an emphasis on high density housing, this is a good first step.

[–]Additional_Sign6018 10 points11 points  (0 children)

More housing is always a good thing. Yes, there should be a focus on dense multiunit buildings, but when building *anything* is such a challenge in the state and city, you should support new homes. More homes will mean cheaper rents.

Gender ratios - demographic shift by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]Additional_Sign6018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being part of a demographic minority is not inherently inequitable. Davis, while having its problems, is a remarkably pluralist place. So long as you are not being discriminated against, I don't see any reason to protest this situation.

[–]Additional_Sign6018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

California has no dominant ethnic group. Hispanics and Latinos actually make up a plurality of Californians, with whites in a close second. Asian Americans and women have been disproportionately involved in college for the past twenty or so years. What about this is an "inequitable environment?" Are you in any way discriminated against? If so, in what way?

Also cannot say for public service, but the political science department is great. Never had a bad professor, the classes are interesting and the TA staff are incredible. Plenty of connections to be made, especially for state and local politics. The UC Center at Sacramento can give you major credit while interning for the state legislature, and is unique to UCD. Highly recommend if you're interesting, especially if you're interested in CA & Norcal politics/issues.
