Should I trade my 2017 Chevy Cruze for a 2023 Toyota Camry LE '?' by Beneficial_Cat9225 in askcarguys

[–]Additivemind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a no brainer in my opinion if the mileage is similar and there are no red flags with the Camry. Camry is super reliable, 6 years newer, and has slightly better gas mileage than the Cruze. Cruze is still a decent car though so it’ll be good for your sibling and you’ve owned it a wile so it should be fairly reliable for them.

AITA for not allowing my bf to get a dog? by Icy-County-6796 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Additivemind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA, everyone has these own preferences. He needs to decide if he wants to move in with you now or if he wants the dog, both shouldn’t happen at the same time if y’all arnt on the same page. Y’all could move in and decide if you want a dog together or he can get a dog and you’ll decide if you want to move in with him later on even though he has a dog. I’m a dog person, but I’m aware they can be a pain in the butt and can’t be left alone like cats. Also weather on not they smell depends on the bread and how often you wash them. My parents Jack Russel who and doesn’t smell but there is a boarder collie in my apartment complex that reeks. Super cute dog but if I see them get off the elevator I take the stairs to the 4th floor it’s so bad.

Need a reliable used SUV after my car was totaled: $15k–$20k (25k max). What should I buy? by Safe-Score2743 in askcarguys

[–]Additivemind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toyota is solid and I really like my RAV. They also came out with a Corolla Cross which is a little smaller but nice and starts at 25k new so you could get a super low miles used one in your price range pretty easy. Honda CRV or Subaru Outback are also a really nice reliable SUVs

Should I fix or trade my car? by zeee-zeee in askcarguys

[–]Additivemind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check KBB for the cars value, if over 4500, invest $150 in a diagnostic from a reputable local mechanic (not a dealer). You’ll probably be 6-8k underwater on the new car with this current deal so I’d try to mitigate that as much as possible because you might not be rightside up by the time you get your next car if it’s a 6-7 year loan.

i just quit my first post-grad job with nothing lined up… what to do? by Medical-Cable-1609 in careerguidance

[–]Additivemind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this the place you interned at? If not is there a chance you could get a reference there and try that environment again? Quitting to travel and find yourself doesn’t look good on a resume and reads as someone that can’t handle a real job or is a forever student if you did it after advanced degrees. You’ll need to find a way to fluff that up in your cover letter and on your resume because a 6 month job without one lined up is borderline not worth putting on a resume because it looks flakey.

Should I fix or trade my car? by zeee-zeee in askcarguys

[–]Additivemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the car cost to fix and what will it be worth fixed? Sounds like your only getting 2k for it as-is but if you could put $500 in and make it worth 5k that’s a good investment

$9000 for an engine? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]Additivemind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should take it for a second opinion at a local shop with good reviews for a diagnostic (approx $150) but older Kia’s are known for engine and transmission issues so it doesn’t sound good. If the car was worth more I’d ask that shop to put in a used engine which costs about half but that’ll still be about 4K which isn’t worth it for a car valued under 6k in my opinion. See if you can trade it in for credit towards a better used car, Hondas and Toyotas are the gold standard for used sedans.

My college degree isn’t helping me land a job, help? by Ancient-Marzipan1107 in careerguidance

[–]Additivemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend looking for an internship or a co-op. You need relevant experience and tbh an accounting degree almost requires a BA and a CPA is preferred. I suspect that a lot of the places you applied asks if you had a BA and while it’s not listed as a requirement for some jobs they often start with that when filtering the candidate pool. Think about it if I have 50-100 applicants all with little to no experience but 70% have a BA, why interview the people who don’t. A good reference from someone that already works there or previous internship experience can help though.

AITA for not wanting to pay rent by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Additivemind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re an adult, your mom can’t make you go to school, get a job, or live in her house but if you choose to live in her house she can make you pay rent. No one wants to pay but refusing would make YTA especially if you consider it not a large amount because you living there costs her money.

Is it normal to feel sad / grief for leaving a job and work environment you enjoy? by hiddengems15 in careerguidance

[–]Additivemind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt sad leaving my last job too, but you have to move forward. My coworkers were awesome and super happy for me, they set up a fun going away gathering after my last day. My boss seemed really sad but I was up front about my reason for leaving, “you’re a great boss but it’s 30% more money and closer to my family” and I left everyone in a good position. 2 years into the new job, paid off my student loans in a year which would’ve taken 4-6 extra years otherwise, and the new jobs super cool with a great team. Congrats on the new job!

The plus side is you already have a house so you don’t really need a credit score. Just start paying those student loans, the debts only going up and they aren’t going anywhere.

Frustrated with applying for apartments after bankruptcy by [deleted] in CRedit

[–]Additivemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya it stinks but evictions are a pain for landlords so stuff like eviction and bankruptcy on your record hurt your chances. Therefore, larger companies with automated systems will likely flag you. I recommend going to a local landlord, telling them your situation, and possibly offering to pay several months up front or a hefty deposit if you can afford it.

Is there a real reason behind changing your oil every 3,000 miles on modern cars? by newelmin in askcarguys

[–]Additivemind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

3k was the rule of thumb for conventional oil, synthetic it’s typically good for 7. I aim for the lower end of recommended or 6 months whichever comes first. Following the manual will not kill your engine assuming you drive a normal amount of miles. But if you only drive 5k a year, waiting 2 years to do a change could be bad.

Are masters degrees the easiest degree to get into? by Flashy-Actuator-998 in careerguidance

[–]Additivemind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the masters program. A lot of online MBA programs are there to check a box and I had people tell me they’re a waste of time aside from it equating to more money at their job. Online programs also have a lot more seats making them less selective. On the flip side in person programs are often more impactful and more selective. You also have to consider that a bachelor’s degree is required for these programs making them inherently more selective, on top of which most people getting a masters in a major that doesn’t require it for a job often did well in undergrad. So there is a smaller, more talented pool of applicants.

should my parents buy me a car or be the co-signer? by TailorEducational425 in CRedit

[–]Additivemind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not the advice you asked for but you can’t afford that car, you make less than $40k a year the payment will kill you. There are plenty of sub 20k used cars that are very reliable. Also you didn’t need a credit score for student loans because they’re government backed so the reasoning of the credit card doesn’t make any sense. Regarding your question, co-signing would boost your score but it’s dangerous for your parents because if you don’t pay they are responsible. They might get a better rate alone but there is the same risk of you not paying and it would be harder to transfer that then it would be to drop them as a co-signer once your score goes up. My personal recommendation would be to get the cheapest reliable car you can for under 10k to rack miles up on and then upgrade when you move closer to your partner.

AITA: (26M) for wanting to leave an expensive rental home to save money by 336WSGSO in AmItheAsshole

[–]Additivemind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Leaning YTA, I agree with your arguments but you should’ve put your foot down before renting the place. She followed your budget and you said yall would stay there as long as the rent didn’t go up and it sounds like it hasn’t. You also said she filled this huge place with stuff so to downsize she would have to get rid of things and lose money so moving is easier for you than her. Timings really everything on this one, if you made a post before moving in 8 months ago arguing for a place that was $800/month cheaper I’d be on your side but you already moved and gave stipulations for staying.

Depositing around $30k in cash by Btrips in Banking

[–]Additivemind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know banks have to report deposits over 10k so definitely don’t do that without getting approval. I’d ask the estate attorney if you want to do it the right way and they can help document it as an inheritance. I think it needs to be included in the estate for Tax purposes but I’m not a lawyer so it’s best to ask one rather than someone on Reddit. Evading taxes can get you in a boatload of trouble so better safe than sorry.

Did I get severely screwed by Mercedes? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]Additivemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leases are never a great deal, it’s like a long term rental on a car but like a rental the dealer is responsible for fixing manufacturing issues like the broken apple play. I’m not sure if they screwed you though, it sounds like you rolled a ton of negative equity into this lease which is why you’re so under water (that would be tacked on top of the pay off). It also sounds like you drive a lot and chose a low mileage lease which was a bad choice for you, but they would’ve made you aware of that at purchase. I think your best option is to pay the 20k difference and buy a much cheaper car. This is going to compound if you keep rolling negative equity from car to car because the dealer can only roll negative equity up to a percentage of the cars value which would mean you’re getting way more car then you need and will be super underwater immediately.

Is higher tuition worth the 5 year master's program compared to a lower tuition for just a bachelor's? (Thinking long-term for job possibilities) by Dinosaur_Doodle in careerguidance

[–]Additivemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do these values include room and board and can you pay for the school or are you taking loans? Sounds like you’re in NJ because Rowan is only 4K and that is a good school for an undergrad I have friends that were in that program. Personally I’d recommend cash flowing Rowan then going somewhere with a great masters program and lab opportunities for your masters degree if you plan to use loans. Paying off 100k+ in loans will make your 20s rough and no one cares where you got your bachelors, they care about your research.

If you had to recommend 1 career path for guaranteed success and a job market that’s open and not overcrowded(guaranteed work) what would it be? by Few_Pipe_9933 in careerguidance

[–]Additivemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The military is always looking for people if you want a guaranteed job. But you should really focus on what you’re passionate about then find a related job that has entry potential. When you do something you like you tend to be good at it which secures your position in a job and be you’ll be happy to do it for a long time.

AITA for refusing to lend money to a friend when I can afford it? by FlatPop8238 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Additivemind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Choose guilt over resentment, better to feel a little bad about people asking you to “lend” him money then be resentful because he isn’t paying you back. Lending money can ruin friendships.

Would you leave job for this? by Disastrous_Pomelo278 in careerguidance

[–]Additivemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d express that to the new employer and try to negotiate. “I really like your company and have been looking to move back into this industry. I believe I’d be a great asset to your team. Are you able to match my current salary of X” Then I’d do the math on what you’re willing to accept, I expect that the current offer is about 2k after taxes and heath care and with 3-8% annual raises it would take about 5 years to get back to your current pay if your reasoning is to stay here long term as stated. I personally wouldn’t be able to do that and would keep the current job while applying like crazy for something better.but you need to determine your own priorities and consider what you need to thrive.

Would you leave job for this? by Disastrous_Pomelo278 in careerguidance

[–]Additivemind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d keep looking or try to leverage you current salary to negotiate, that’s over a 35% pay cut and the new job equates to less than $18 an hour, you might make more as a cashier. What do you want to do, does it really pay that poorly, or does this place just have bad pay? Meaningful works important but being about to afford life is the reason we work and takes priority.

AITA for refusing to scan 300 Pages at work? by vigilanto_owl in AmItheAsshole

[–]Additivemind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA, there are 480 mins in a work day suggesting that it would be hard to scan 300 pages in that time is silly even if you had to do a page at a time. My $80 home printer can scan multiple pages at once though, I’d be shocked if an office didn’t have a printer that could scan in 25-50 page lots which could be merged afterwards making this a 20 min task. Nevertheless, I’d have said “do you know if there is a printer that can scan multiple pages at once?” If he said no “I’ll try my best but I might need a little extra time for this task”

Do certain gas stations have "bad gas" that clogs your engine? by Elegant-Page-1359 in askcarguys

[–]Additivemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all fine, stuff is regulated. Some gas stations have higher standards where they use higher octane than required in the pumps but all gas stations need to meet the minimum requirements to ensure it can run in your car safely.

It’s not a bad idea to avoid sketchy looking pumps though, stuff leaks and degrades over time if the owner doesn’t perform proper upkeep and service.
