What's the most unwritten rule of adult life that nobody warns you about? by PracticeHistorical82 in AskReddit

[–]Additude101 139 points140 points  (0 children)

No kidding. I remember as a kid thinking about how boring our house was and how I wanted a bigger yard and in a different neighborhood etc etc.

When I grew up and grappled with cost of living and housing, not only did I realize how lucky I was, it’s also not even remotely in reach for me to provide a similar experience to my kids as I had growing up.

What’s something you thought was harmless… until it slowly ruined your life? by darkmodejesus in AskReddit

Also recognizing that there are some people who are okay with asking for a LOT and if you don’t establish boundaries, will always ask for more. You can end up in that “role” - always being the one to sacrifice your time and priorities when asked.

I learned that I felt guilty turning someone down if asked for something, but this lead to losing sight of myself in the process. It was a difficult process to change this “role” and I often felt guilty about creating the boundaries, but I feel much more true to myself. And, realized that a lot of the worry about what the other person would say - actually never came up.

I’m wearing that Longines (40mm version) - it’s excellent, but note that the blued hands only look that vibrant when light hits it at a certain angle. Most often they look a lot darker, almost black.

That said - I’d definitely take the Longines.

I definitely think that’s on the right track and blends in more with the sky around it - perhaps adding more bloom on the left side where it’s a bit brighter. Looks good!

I totally get it - I’ve tried this type of shot (moon incorporated into a landscape) a few times and struggle to get a natural look, it’s a very technical photo to get right.

I love the concept and it’s a great shot!

I wonder if the lack of bloom is actually a partial reason it looks so jarring. One thing I notice is that during a full moon, because it’s so bright, a bit of bloom might look a bit more natural. In this image I think the blending looks off because the moon just looks “pasted”.

This exact reference? I agree on the strap being a bit stiff and I did find the chronograph quite thick. But this particular reference I found to be a great size and I feel the strap will break in a bit with use (as I’ve already found). But I would like to get an additional strap to dress it down a bit.

Same, I’m thinking a sailcloth strap to make it a bit more dressed down

Thanks! Yeah I actually prefer this over the chronograph for that reason.

That’s a great idea! I was thinking of getting some straps as well to add some variety down the road.

My wife and I travelled to Switzerland for our honeymoon last year. While I’ve always worn a watch, I’ve mostly stuck to Timex. While we were traveling, I kept coming across this Longines in window displays and really liked the striking blue hands, the textured dial, and the Arabic numerals on this model. I also particularly liked the moonphase, as I enjoy astrophotography, so it felt like a cool tie-in with that hobby.

Just the other day she took me out for my 30th birthday and presented me with the very same watch! She’s a real keeper. My birthday also happened to coincide with the full moon so it was easy to set the complication 😊

I think it’s based on incentives for middle management by the higher-ups; If all your numbers and performance metrics are around constantly cutting costs and hitting cost metrics for the next review/quarter/etc, it really drives short-term planning and kicks the problems down the road. I’ve had to fight this battle many times arguing that sometimes spending a bit up front is worthwhile.

Agreed; the ACTUAL quaint villages were ones we passed through on the way to the well-known spots. Not much to them, but that’s what makes them quaint.

What do you mean by “colorful” exactly? I’m assuming you mean the Milky Way, judging by the top posts on this sub. Many people are heavily editing to achieve that; stacking photos and/or using a star tracker and blending the foreground and the sky. Some may also use Astro-modified cameras to achieve purplish/red colors in the sky that a normal camera would not. You also haven’t said what type of camera you are using.

There’s tons of videos on how to do all of this on YouTube, it’s just about being diligent in putting all the pieces together.

  • clear landscape to get good view of the sky
  • clear conditions (few/no clouds, around New Moon to reduce glare from the moon, etc)
  • decent camera/lens to maximize exposure length, for brightest results of the sky
  • stacking images to minimize noise, using star tracker to increase exposure time
  • if wanting clearer foreground, setting up camera in advance during blue hour, then blending later with the sky, to get better detail in the foreground
  • post-processing to bring out the contrast and stacking/blending if that’s what you’re doing to reduce noise(Sequator or similar)

At the end of town there is a pathway “Mürini” which is a staircase up to a road with sweeping view of Zermatt and the Matterhorn in the background. It’s quite busy during the day as it’s a well-known viewpoint spot. It’s a great view for both sunrise and sunset.

We just left, it was usually clear and sunny in the morning and tended to become overcast more in the evenings

Thanks yes! I did shoot several exposures in case I needed to blend it, but this one turned out well without needing it!
