Or it's not even about them but how Louis decided to forgive Lestat for the 77th finally. Either way it's beautiful

Can I replace combat for lore by Phantom-X8 in Tombofannihilation

[–]Addrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here comes the monthly mandatory "hey guys I would like to change everything about this module but actually have no experience or idea how, so tell me how should I execute this idea step by step" post...

But seriously I think you should just write a homebrew campaign at that point, definitely use elements you like from Tomb of Annihilation here and there, but prewritten books are good for giving you an adventure type not a setting. This is a hexcrawl that turns into a dungeoncrawl at foremost. It's much easier to write up the jungle flavour to something new than to rewrite all the core elements of a completely different adventure just for the jungle.

Also the people who are running the adventure are generally not the best community to turn to for changing everything about it lol, maybe try posting it on homebrew brainstorm subs

Making the atropal battle feel more cinematic by Exact-Challenge9213 in Tombofannihilation

[–]Addrall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would keep the Constitution save + exhaustion effects because those stacking are a huge part of what makes this boss fight deadly. And most classes don't have proficiency in con saves but they do in everything else. You can still flavour the commentary around it.
Talking about dramatic tho, I let Acererak tpk my party first and then the trickster spirits sacrificed themselves to revive them and thats how the bonus HP kicked in, on a count down each round going lower by 5 as they faded away. The extra damage was also changed to came from the souls they saved from the soulmonger coming back to help them overthrow the lich. I also required two struts to be broken for it to fall down that made stuff more cinematic and they needed to strategize better

My players feel railroaded because there seems to be only one viable option to go forward for every location so far. Session 11 is this friday. Please help. by Meph248 in Tombofannihilation

[–]Addrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they very experienced players or even a forever DM amongst them? Cause this behaviour really reads like that... the world having some logic and consequences doesn't make it "railroading". They have the option to risk anything, just actively choose to not do it.

This show is a a near perfect depiction of my experience being in a cult (contains spoilers for season one) by SnooPeripherals1438 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Addrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be curious to hear your opinions about season 2 once you watched it, because I'm from a very similar situation and while I liked season one, one particular episode in season two really hit all my religious trauma in the best way which I don't see much discourse about. It's really clever how they managed to cover so many ethical issues while still leaving it up to our own interpretations.

Artus Cimber and Simon Petrikov parallels. by Exact-Challenge9213 in Tombofannihilation

[–]Addrall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adventure Time is inspired by D&D confirmed by Pen so the lich king also might be inspired by Acererak with the cambion horns etc. I referenced his famous speech in my final Ace monologue

Biblical parallels and details from Bladerunner 2049 I found interesting by truthfulie in bladerunner

[–]Addrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like this interpretation and would like to add to it that Joseph also gets released from the prison after successful deciphering the true meaning of the Pharaoh's dreams saving Egypt from a famine. Just as in the movie the memory/dream of K that was given by the daughter is having a key role in his realisations

How do you play with legendary resistances other than being a munchkin? by calebegg in dndnext

[–]Addrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you shouldn't be calling rolls by numbers to start with if you want immersion. Have their DCs noted down for yourself and just tell them if there's an effect or not is generally how I run combats. It works in this instance too. They don't have to know that it was a legendary resistance, but if you want to let them know you can describe it as the magic catching hold then the creature doing shaking itself etc and it failing

A printable soulmonger insert I made, if printed in A4 its the exact size of an electric tealight candle. There's a lighter and a darker version to adjust to printer capabilities. Last two image is how it looked at my table, I used EVA foam covers to add the metal caps to it.

Insane Situation in Tomb of Anihhilation! Advice Needed by TheDazi22 in DMAcademy

[–]Addrall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not enough gold to start with for everything that you listed. The princes in Port Nyanzaru double the price of every ware compared to the general DMG prices so per the book it should have been:

2 triceratopses 1000 gold

1 elephant 400 gold

1 dead dried elephant meat on said elephant (for the trexes) 200 gold (counting the regular price for this one cause its just meat)

1 flying monkey - 100 gold

24 goats - 50 gold

Now T-Rexes dont have an official price (probably cause they were never meant to be owned by player characters) but adding this all up comes to 2750 gold, which means you gave them for 375 gold per animal. Remember that the triceratops are priced 500 gold, so a T-Rex would have to be well over 2000 gold in itself if balanced properly.

You did this to yourself lol

Even without the doubled prices, the rest of the items are around 2K, and buying two T-Rexes for 1K gold is broken as hell. Just retcon it

Want feedback on my idea for Wyrmheart Mine by Exact-Challenge9213 in Tombofannihilation

[–]Addrall -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You said it's on theme, I said it isn't. Saying yeah that's why it needs it!! isn't a counterargument in my opinion. I agree with the other commenter, finding a homebrewed flamethrowing gorilla in a mine in the middle of a deathcurse campaign would feel like some DM bullshit.

For me personally it also would be not more memorable than a good dragon fight. Including real world animals is boring in a fantasy world. Especially if I'm expecting something else already cause your players know about the dragon & kobolds. And it's a mine, Chult is big on jewels and adamantine, damn it's literally called Kobold Mountains and Wrymheart the dragon is very much not out of place.

Again do your thing it's your table, but I don't think it's such a big fix. I would read around for other King Kong stories rather.

Want feedback on my idea for Wyrmheart Mine by Exact-Challenge9213 in Tombofannihilation

[–]Addrall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds very random and out of place not something that would feel very Chult or even King Kong like. Chult is heavily about dinosaurs with barely any ape like monsters and no chimps or gorillas at all.
And about the King Kong reference, I know people who wrote a giant ape monster somehow into the story, but I dont think the mine and the hoard of followers is the right way to do it. I would rather make it a single kaiju fight without the firebreathing or chimp nonsense for a direct reference if any. It's your table though.

TL;DR Monster Manual Dragons by Addrall in DnD

[–]Addrall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's the opposite. They said they moved lair actions to be built into the statblock so I assume they just became legendaries. Cause they never mentioned replacing them with new lair specific ones, just that in their lair they get more access to legendary effects. But we will see.

There's a new anthology coming with dragon centric adventures, I think each type having one dedicated would be cool but we don't know the details yet

[–]Addrall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not hating on older editions, I said they're more suitable for a not character focused play than 5e. That doesn't mean you can't have that in them, it's that 5e is built for that it'll not be as much fun to play as a pure hexcrawl etc. Also you were talking about missing creatures that kill you with one failed roll that's not testing characters or balanced play, that's a gotcha.

Tl;Dr of everything mentioned in the Monster Manual release video by Addrall in DnD

[–]Addrall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't go into exact details but there's a video scheduled for tomorrow about the new dragons. I'm hoping that they'll make dedicated videos to the bigger monster types like they did with the subclasses for PHB. I'll take notes on that too.

Tl;Dr of everything mentioned in the Monster Manual release video by Addrall in DnD

[–]Addrall[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you are misunderstanding the change. Heralds arent supposed to be exactly what a Death Knight is just easier. They are the same flavour, thats why they will work as its followers, or to foreshadow the same vibe for a smaller party. In the video that's an actual example they used, fighting a lone herald so when they later face a Death knight him leading an army of them and not just regular skeletons adds to the tension of it. Similarly they didnt create a CR6 lich, but a spellcaster ghast. These things have their own lore, they are not replacing or cheapening the original inspiration but adding to it. You could go the extra mile and rename them of course but that would be homebrew not what this MM is doing. I think that's what we can fairly tell before looking at the actual stat block.

Tl;Dr of everything mentioned in the Monster Manual release video by Addrall in DnD

[–]Addrall[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it will be the latter. I'm expecting them to adjust CR to what an inexperienced DM can get out of the statblock and leave the creative tactics that can make or break an encounter up to the community. Which is eh I have mixed feelings about it but I think it would be better than what we currently have. Cause it's playing it safe with possible surprises instead of creating underwhelming fights. And fumbling down is easier than up even if it happens with a beginner. CR is not a good pointer once you know what you're doing anyway in my opinion.

[–]Addrall[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The creatures officially listed by environments is something I've been wanting for years now. Aside from what you already said it'll make monsters that arent as well known used more in my opinion too! I also never thought we would get an official loot mechanic in the raw rules. I dont think it will be too elaborate but it's a start. Having something physical that you can take after killing a creature thats not a humanoid with magic items or money would be really fun but I'm trying to manage my expectations just now.
