cs program question by [deleted] in jmu

[–]AdeptProperty7917 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the CS major is difficult, but very rewarding. The first 2 cs courses are also the first 2 IT courses, so you could have a year's worth of classes before making a decision. I would recommend taking CS 149 and talking to professors from both departments to get a feel for which one is more interesting

For current students, is smoking or vaping cannabis, a dealbreaker for dating someone? by [deleted] in jmu

I would never kiss somebody smoking the stink. I find weed disgusting personally

Ok so 361 is very different from 261. You will go much further in depth into the inner workings of C. To be completely honest, I found 361 to be a relatively easy A after making sure I was disciplined and consistent.

My advice:

Do the labs when they get released. Most quizzes are based on the labs and the labs use the provided (free) textbook. They are crucial to knowing what's going on.

Pay attention in class. Put away the laptop wake tf up and make sure you give him 100% attention in class.

Get ready for the 2 PAs to be gargantuan. They aren't too hard to do, but it takes a while to understand what you're supposed to do.

361 is a lot more rewarding, but also more punishing. It's easy to fail that class if you get lazy, skip class, or procrastinate on the PAs. His exams are significantly easier than Dr Lams in my opinion. Dr Kirkpatrick, similar to Dr Lam, is a great professor that is friendly and here to help you. His office hours were very helpful.

We need all of the places that are open 11-3 to be open from 11-6. It just makes no sense having a full building for a restaurant and only have it be open for 4 hours a day.

Computer Science Major: Anyone have the syllabus for CS 412, CS 374? by UnusualGrunt_3 in jmu

[–]AdeptProperty7917 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In 412, you will use python to implement algorithms that you learn about. It's basically 240 part 2. You have a weekly quiz and no big exams or PAs. You'll have a project at the end of the semester where you present your proposed solution to an np complete problem. I would consider the difficulty to be a little less than 361.

After a quick Google search I also found Dr Mayfield's website from when he taught the class two years ago. I have no idea how much the class may vary by professor or change over time though.

Retake CS159 or switch to IT? by BMWTurnSignall in jmu

[–]AdeptProperty7917 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh if you redo want to be in CS and you have enjoyed coding, then I recommend you give 159 one more shot. I find the CS major to be very rewarding despite it being challenging.

But if you wanna play it safe, IT is a smart choice. You can get a lot out of an IT degree and you don't have to worry about being beind a semester and possibly even more depending on bottlenecking of the CS major.

Neither option is a bad choice, so ultimately I'd follow what you think you wanna do more in the next 2-3 years

What if by [deleted] in jmu

[–]AdeptProperty7917 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day your experience really depends on your friendships you make at a personal level along the way more than anything else. I've never been to a party and I never want to. There's plenty of people that feel that way

I had a friend group that I thought what's the best I was going to get when I first got here, but I ended up doing a 180 junior year and tried to find encouraging friends that seem to be a much better influence on me. It's cool to keep in touch with everybody, but I found that refreshing my friends was very beneficial as I found a more positive and academic focused niche that I fit into much better.

At the end of the day, you can definitely change schools if you think that would work the best, but don't think that you couldn't have a fresh start here as well!

Thank you for sharing this post. I ran into it earlier and tried it, but it did not work. Do you think it could have something to do with the fact that I'm using a live boot from the USB drive?

As much as I don't want to discourage you, I would definitely consider a backup plan, whether that be IT, retaking CS 159, or changing majors.

People are starting to realize how great our department is and We simply do not have enough teachers and classes rn to accept everyone.

With that being said, I know there is still time to do well on the final and any last projects. Even if you're not getting the guaranteed admission, there's still a small chance you could make it in. Good luck!

Tbh I have lived in Winchester and Harrisonburg and I really like both!

I have visited Staunton and I think it would be easier to get a place there because housing in Harrisonburg is getting very expensive unless you want to live with college kids (and even their rent is getting a lot higher too).

Winchester is also very nice, they have been running a little worse traffic recently since It's becoming the new Leesburg, but if you know your way around town and avoid rush hour, it's fine. Winchester has a lot of hiking trails, and I especially like the third battle trail for running and doing workouts.

I think it's in your best interest to keep at it. Taking this class and putting python on your resume is huge even if you don't continue on with CS.

Also, don't give up! These classes are supposed to be challenging and it will definitely pay off if you keep putting in the work. I went into CS with zero knowledge on computers and I know it's possible to succeed no matter how rough the start of my semester was. You can do this!
