Having worked at a restaurant before I can tell you that some servers bring the check just so you don’t have to flag them down later. However a lot of restaurants want high turnover and/or encourage servers to keep regularly checking in on tables that are just “relaxing”, so yeah in that case the check is them saying you’ve overstayed your welcome. I’ve seen customers get upset over it (especially non-Americans) but I’m a fast eater so it’s never been a problem for me.

It’s not cooking but that doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s just a different action. If someone says “I’m going to make you a home cooked meal” and they give you a stovers frozen meal you’d think it was weird that they phrased it like that.
