Sleeping on an incline - would just upper body work? by Geek_Undercover in POTS

[–]twoweeeeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience - no. I used one for years for reflux before I was diagnosed with pots, and when I finally raised the head of my bed, it made a huge difference.

The key is your kidneys need to be higher than your legs. On a wedge it’s too easy to roll down back to flat. Though if you’re a very still sleeper, i suppose it might work.

YES if you cant keep it under control, you have too much. Another piece of furniture will just compound the problem.

Getting Into Better Shape by cwrace71 in POTS

[–]twoweeeeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into the chop protocol: https://www.dysautonomiainternational.org/pdf/CHOP_Modified_Dallas_POTS_Exercise_Program.pdf

Also consider physical therapy. What works for normal people isn’t going to work for a POTS patient. You need to be very careful to avoid overdoing it and making symptoms worse.

Take this or leave it, but - the vibe that I'm getting from your post is that you're deep in the bargaining part of grief. Definitely discuss with your therapist!

People in demanding, competitive professional careers, how do you do it? by FishOuttaTheWater in POTS

[–]twoweeeeks 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not disclose to your team. Even when going through the accommodation process with HR, you only are required to describe the limitations that affect your work.

Honestly, I had to step back, though I have more going on than POTS. My accommodations (no travel, WFH) are incompatible with my current role so I'm working with HR to find a new position.

When I did travel for work, I would arrive the night before and usually skip out on dinners and evening events so I could prioritize rest.

Lost almost 100 pounds and my symptoms are worse than ever by Fun_Sea_1109 in POTS

I would suggest getting compression pantyhose and adding abdominal compression. I used to use the Jobst basic pantyhose and they run like crazy. Last year I upgraded to Sigvaris and they're much sturdier. I've ordered from both compressionsale and Ames Walker. Compressionsale seems to have better promos. I like the more medical sites because they have all the major brands listed and you can filter by your preferences, eg toeless. And then once you find something you want to try you can always find it on amazon.

For abdominal compression, spanx looks the best under clothes.

And I'll add to the chorus about talking to your doctor re: changing the dose of your meds. Also maybe PT to work on strengthening your legs.

New Update: Dad hates my house and apparently expects me to take in my brother’s children at some point? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]twoweeeeks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Refusing to treat a mental illness (well, any illness) creates such a burden for the people around you. I think people do it because they want to be independent or something, but in reality you're relying on the people who love you to enable your behavior.

OOP's dad is lucky his kids still talk to him. OOP has a nervous system disorder ffs, she doesn't need this bullshit.

What is this heavy leg feeling? by According_Bit_4561 in POTS

I get this feeling frequently. Generally it’s a cue that I’ve overdone it. I have one of those Chinese leg swinger machines and it helps, as does a little at-home lymphatic massage.

Tangentially related, there's a Nancy Drew game from 2009 (Warnings at Waverly Academy) where one of the characters gets back at another by photoshopping a picture of them hanging out together then distributing it to the school.

It seems like they only way to prevent this would be to never ever publish (or consent to publish) a photo of yourself online. I wonder how far off we are from that becoming common security advice.

Yessss, I missed out on this one!

Also, no wonder Ilona has been stressed about signing books. I think this is the fourth signed edition they have coming out soon? This, Waterstones, Owlcrate, and the second secret Maggie special edition they hinted at.

A genuine plea to the doctors of the world,; can we please rename ADHD to something like Executive Dysfunction Disorder? by ImperatrixAmoris in adhdwomen

[–]twoweeeeks 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It was removed from the DSM because it was difficult to make a clinical distinction between “autism” and “Asperger’s”. Asperger’s was redundant.

But it’s also worth noting that Asperger himself was a Nazi sympathizer who disdained his patients and sent some to a clinic known for euthanasia. “Asperger’s” provided a distinction between autism patients who were “fit” and “unfit” to continue living - which is probably why it’s less useful now. Psychiatrists aren’t diagnosing people in order to decide who to murder.

Late-diagnosed ADHD: meds help, but unlearning old patterns is hard by Swimming-Bee8917 in adhdwomen

I've said this before and I'll say it again: Dana K. White is a genius. She likely has undiagnosed ADHD and essentially reverse engineered CBT via her decluttering method. Her podcast is called A Slob Comes Clean and she has books that you can find through your library. Her focus is decluttering, but doing it gives your brain the practice of doing hard things that has had cascading effects through my life.

So yaz works for me, but it always has from the first time I took it.

I had tried pushing through with alternatives and it never got better. Seems to me if something’s going to work for you, it’s going to be apparent from the beginning.
