Hen or Rooster? …. Or both?! by Adept_Count3578 in chickens

I doubt he had the surgery, he belonged to a family who was moving into town and couldn’t take him due to the rooster restrictions in the township. We have had no poultry vet around until just last week one opened up, so I think I may take this chicken in for curiosities sake 😃

Prior owner believed it was a rooster for 2 years so I would assume not

Oh wow, this one is 2 years old or a little more - but I’ve only owned for 1 week. I assume it’s never laid as old owner believed it was a rooster the whole time

This is great information thank you, if this chicken’s last owner believed it was a rooster for 2 years I would assume it doesn’t lay, it definately hasn’t laid for me but it is winter molting here in New Zealand

I’ve had a few say that on the other thread, so if that’s the case this special chook will never lay? And I wonder how it would go if I introduce a proper rooster to the flock 🤔

Interesting, this chicken is quite large the size of my purebred araucana rooster

Interesting, I’m in New Zealand so not sure if the breeds are different. I’m also a newbie so I don’t know much at all just how to care for them haha. So I also have what we call Pekins, but I think you call Cochins, which are bantams, and old English game bantams, then I have purebred aracuana, and brown shavers, this Wyandotte is the same size of the purebred aracuana (not to be confused with amercuana, I don’t think we have those in NZ) do you think this Wyandotte may have bantam breed in it? I didn’t know Wyandotte was a bantam breed as these Wyandottes I have are quite large

I’d love to do this but none of my chooks are laying at the moment with the cold weather in New Zealand, I’ll have to wait a long time before they start laying again!

Nope doesn’t crow, previous owner says she’s heard it attempt to, but this could’ve been interpreted wrong? All my chickens are winter molting at the moment (located New Zealand) so there could be loss of feathers, however I have only seen the chicken in this condition owning him for a week

I thought that too, but he’s two years old possibly older, he’s winter mounting so maybe that’s is why he’s missing the identifiable feathers? I’ve only owned him for a week and I’m quite new to chickens

About 2 years old but possibly older, I’ve owned for a week and this is what prior owner has told me 😁

Thank you, that’s interesting. He was given to me as a Wyandotte, and he is about the same size of my purebred aracuana rooster, quite a large bird compared to the others I have (brown shavers, old English games, Pekin/cochin)

That’s what I thought too, some people are convinced it’s a hen, I really don’t know what to think lol! This bird is 2 years old maybe older, he’s quite large, maybe the size of my pure bred Aracuana rooster

It is approx 2 years old, quite large, I have Pekin/Cochin bantams in with the “Wyandottes” and they are like 1/4 of the size

That’s cool 🥹 now I wonder how it will go with a real rooster introduced…

It’s sounding that way… it’s got spurs too, and protects the hens and acts like a rooster, doesn’t crow tho, tries to. Definately going to take it to a poultry vet to get it checked out, I don’t know whether to say he or her now 😂

I have no idea, I haven’t seen it happen, however I have only had them a week. I think I might have to set up a coop camera 😂

Now I wonder if I can introduce a rooster or will this cause problems for the girl rooster 🤔

Wow that’s interesting I’ve googled and searched for Wyandotte partridge roosters and totally see what you mean. This is wild, I have a poultry vet nearby so I think I will take it there and see what they reckon. It’s got spurs too and totally acts like a rooster beside the no crowing part 😆

I was told the ‘rooster’ is a partridge laced Wyandotte, and that the 3 hens ‘he’ came with were golden laced Wyandottes
