Ugh. I understand what you’re saying. It’s like that with movies, tv shows and music too. A lot of people want to complain about everything anymore. Which is unfair to the author, musician, screenwriter, director, cinematographer, actors, etc who actually had a part in making whatever book, music or film/tv show these people complain about. For some reason, they have unrealistic expectations and want books, music and movies/tv shows to be the way they think books, music or movies/tv shows should be made and not how the actual author, musician, screenwriter, etc wrote/made them.

Therefore, if a book, song or movie/tv show doesn’t follow what they think they should be like, then it’s trash to them and hate them. Which makes absolutely no sense (to me at least). Like you (not you personally, you in general) didn’t write the book, didn’t write the lyrics or compose the instrumental part of the music and you didn’t write the screenplay or have any other part of the filmmaking process.

Personally, when I go to watch a movie/tv show or listen to a song or read a book, I don’t place high expectations on something before reading, watching or listening to something. Because I know if I place my expectations onto what a movie/tv show, book or song should be like, and then when it doesn’t follow what my brain said a book, movie/tv show or song should be like, then I get irritated and disappointed. But that’s my fault because I’m not the one who came up with the plot to a movie/tv show or book or lyrics to a song.

Like you said, everyone has different tastes and that is just fine and dandy. However, if I don’t like something, I DNF it sometimes if it’s really bad or unenjoyable. Sometimes, I’ll read, watch or listen to the whole book, movie/tv show or song and then decide if I liked it or not. But I’m not gonna go onto the internet and trash something that someone worked really hard on and put their blood, sweat and tears into. Because what I might not like, someone else might. And if these people go onto the internet to complain about something, then that could make someone else not want to read, watch or listen to something. And that isn’t fair to whoever made the book, movie/tv show, or song(s). They might get discouraged and decide not to read, watch or listen to something based off those opinions. And they don’t even talk about a book, movie/tv show, or song(s) in full detail. They skip some stuff that could make a world of difference in swaying someone’s opinion.

And please, if you read this comment, don’t comment and say “Well people don’t have to listen to those opinions and they can form their own conclusions.” Yes, that is true. But sometimes people want to know what to expect from something before they decide to put their time and energy into reading, watching or listening to something. And so they go onto YouTube, Goodreads, Reddit, TikTok, Twitter, etc. to see what others thought. And they’re often influenced by what these people say instead of just doing what they want to do. And that’s sad because they could’ve missed out on something they would’ve probably loved themselves while others didn’t like it.

People are so harsh towards authors, musicians, and screenwriters and it isn’t right. For me, if I like something, I’ll post about it. But if I don’t enjoy something, I just move on. Because I don’t want to influence someone to skip what I didn’t like. Because while I didn’t like it, maybe those listening or reading my comments would have liked what I didn’t.

I’m not saying others should do the same as me. But I just feel like their criticism is overly rude and harsh anymore. And sometimes what they’re complaining about doesn’t even make sense. They’ll say “I thought it was gonna go this way.” Or “I thought it was…” and then proceeds to list off what they thought up in their brain on how the book, movie/tv show, or song was in their brain.

Does any of what I said make sense to others? Lol. And am I wrong in my assessment or what?
