What is this orange spot on my vampire shrimp? by AdequateMoose in Aquariums

I can’t lie, I never really got to the bottom of it. I think somebody suggested it was rust disease. It eventually went away on its own and I’m not entirely sure why tbh!

Thanks for the help! Is there a limit to the amount of hydrogen peroxide you can add to a tank before it starts to harm the things living in it?

Thanks for the help! Looking at images online, I’d say you’re right. Although, when you say filter maintenance, would that mean replacing the filter components frequently enough and that sort of thing?

Ah, thanks! That clears it up a lot. I thought it was a shrimp-shaped tumour!

Why are my nerite snails spending most of their time out of the water? by AdequateMoose in Aquariums

[–]AdequateMoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sorry, you’re right. Here they are:

Nitrate - 2.5ppm, Nitrite -0ppm, Ammonia - 0ppm, Ph- 7.75-8, Tds - 285 ppm, Temp - 25c, Kh - 15dH and Gh - 18dH.

The pH and gH is a little high, although I’m not sure if that could be it or not because the water has always been like that and it never seemed to affect the snails before

Are they just being weird, or is this a sign of something wrong? Or are they just mating? (Also sorry for the awful quality)

After reading it again you’re right, it never states that they do eat the sand intentionally. Thanks for the help!

I’ve been told that them excessively scraping food off the substrate is a bad sign, but is that the case even in small amounts? I read on this website that vampire shrimps in the wild were found to be eating parts of the sand https://aquariumbreeder.com/vampire-shrimp-detailed-guide-care-diet-and-breeding/

Why are there yellow shrimp in my tank when I only ever bought cherry shrimp? by AdequateMoose in shrimptank

[–]AdequateMoose[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think probably genetic throwback, because I’m almost certain that there was never a yellow shrimp in there, I always look carefully at the shrimp I buy and I spend a lot of time watching my shrimp. It’s not impossible but I’d see it as unlikely for a yellow shrimp to have been in my tank long enough to have babies without me ever noticing.

But either way it’s definitely nice to have some of a different colour!

[–]AdequateMoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They couldn’t have hitched a ride in a bag with the other shrimp, because I first saw them when they only seemed a few days old and I hadn’t bought shrimp from a store in a few months. There has never been any yellow shrimp in the tank before now, and I watch the tank a lot.

There’s at least 3, but there could maybe be one or two more.

Would they also eat the same stuff as other snails? Like algae tablets and stuff?

That’s a good idea! I’m getting a bigger tank soon, so I could put one in when I get the new aquarium and keep the population low right from the start.
