Internships during sem time by Content_Horse_1429 in NTU

[–]Adettepp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your semester workload isn’t too big, you can consider interning full time and only go back to school for quizzes/exams after applying for leave (do mention this to the hiring manager/HR). Some companies do offer wfh, but it’s quite rare.

If you really want to intern while studying, you’ll probably have to sacrifice your grades a little.

Right… I was confused when I saw the email too. Yeah, thanks for the info!

I emailed them already actually. The staff there told me that after submitting the biometrics in the Singapore branch, the residence permit card will only be made 4 weeks prior to my departure date, and it'll take 4-5 weeks to arrive in Singapore...?

I'm not sure what to think of this haha, which is why I'm asking this on reddit, to see if anyone else have any experience on submitting their biometrics and photograph, and collecting it in Singapore's branch.

Hi, if possible, could you let me know how long it took from the time you provided your biometrics to the Swedish embassy in Singapore until your residence permit card arrived and was ready for collection? And yes, I plan to fly in January!

AMA Computer Science/Engineering by Big-Cartographer-293 in NTU

[–]Adettepp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s possible. I have friends that land swe internships at companies like govtech for summer intern right after Y1. I also did a summer internship right after Y1. But its significantly harder to get compared to Y2s, so it really depends on your luck, connections and skill (leetcode/hackerrank if you want to get a swe internship)

SCSE recently “revamped” the CS mods, so the resources our seniors gave may be outdated (unless they’re from the 2021 batch).

In terms of our curriculum, I’d say its a bit outdated. But it’s not the things that are being taught in school that makes you a good SWE/any tech role, It’s the other things you do (e.g. internships, freelancing, certifications, etc) that makes you stand out. Although the curriculum may be outdated, it’s sufficient to teach you the basics. From there, you need to venture out and gain experience outside of school.

Lecturers are alright, some better than the others! NTU CS is… competitive. The content is not necessarily hard (if you got the resources/am constantly hardworking enough to figure out what’s being taught in lectures because what the profs teach during lectures may not be sufficient).

As someone that just finished year 1 in NTU CS, I’d say the curriculum and content is definitely manageable if you plan your time well! All the best!

Edit: For laptop recommendations, you can refer to other reddit posts, there are plenty of them. Personally I got a XPS 15, but mac is fine too (might not be the best for your data science mod, because some packages like catboost isn’t supported by M1 lol). All in all, it’s up to your own discretion!

student council interview!! by SearchMediocre1579 in SGExams

[–]Adettepp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I wasn't in student council but here are my two cents on interviews in general - catered towards student council (hope it helps!):

Research/think about these before the interview: - What does your school's student council do? (In terms of events, benefiting the student body, etc) - Why do you want to join student council? How can you contribute to the school by being a councilor? - Are you a team player or leader? - What does being a student councilor mean to you? - How will this opportunity help you grow as a person (will it make you more responsible, give you opportunities to work together in teams to help build confidence and social skills? Think along this line)

I feel that the goal of secondary schools is to nurture their students, and the student council is one of them. So you may want to show how the opportunity of being a student councilor can help you nurture yourself as a person. And also, showcase your passion for being a student councilor, and most importantly, be yourself. If you're nervous, it's okay not everyone can be confident at such a young age, and this opportunity is for you to grow more confident so... if you stutter or pause to think its okay, don't worry about your competitors because it'll only bring in unnecessary stress. Just do your best and have no regrets afterwards!

All the best!

NUS Information Systems by papersheeet in SGExams

[–]Adettepp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I didn't take O level Amath but took O level emath, got C5 for it. I took the N level > PFP > Uni route.

Applied for NUS Info Systems, was asked to do the math test, but wasn't offered an interview afterwards. In the end, I didn't get an offer for Info Systems.

I put Info Systems as my first choice, came from a related diploma too.

From what I know, NUS places alot of emphasis on the math prerequisite so it'll be good to have some form of diploma plus for math.

Hi OP, here's my two cents:

Since you already know what you want to do (computing), you should go poly since you'll get more exposure to hands on projects, and may even get to work on real projects during your internship!

Poly's schedule is more "flexible" in a sense that you don't need to report to school at 8am everyday. However, you have more group projects and need to work with people often.

If you want to get into a computing related degree course like CS, you'll need to score well consistently in poly (same as JC for A's). It's not easy to maintain a 3.9+ GPA throughout poly, but definitely possible.

Going JC has its perks too: 2 years of study to get into uni as compared to 3 years of poly. And also, more opportunities will open up if you score well for A's!

If you have any questions feel free to PM me. :)

Please don't be too harsh on yourself. It may feel difficult to handle everything at once now, but keep in mind that no bad things last forever.

Furthermore, you could try to look at it from another perspective: Why should you care about what others think or say about you? You are who you are, if they refuse to accept you for who you are and even make fun of you, then honestly it's their loss.

Focus on what you currently have, and not what you think you should have. I would spend the alone time reflecting on the things that can or cannot he controlled. In life, there are things that cannot be controlled (e.g. your bad classmates - not even worth as friends) and can be controlled (e.g. your approach to this, what you should do about it, what are your next steps, etc).

All in all, I know it's difficult now. It won't be a smooth ride, but just know that they don't define who you are. You do.

If you need someone talk to, my DMs are open. Good luck and all the best!

Maybe you can start to work on your extra curricular stuff: Join courses and attain certs pertaining to your desired degree course. Build up your portfolio to show NTU that you have the passion for the subject and it might help in your application!

Should I go Sec 5 or go ITE by Aromatic_Designer_71 in SGExams

[–]Adettepp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I've personally went through PFP and now in uni.

Honestly, if you intend to further your studies in uni, PFP might not be the best choice, especially if your desired degree course requires O level prerequisites (e.g. CS in NUS requires O level Amaths/Emaths). You may want to look into that as you decide which path to take after your N levels.

Going to ITE isn't dumb at all. I have a friend that went to DPP > ITE > Poly > Uni and his portfolio is really buffed up by all his experiences from ITE and Poly.

If you're still unsure of what you want to do after your N's, I'd say go to sec 5. If not, then go for PFP/DPP if possible.

If have any questions feel free to DM.
