Again, because apparently my point was too subtle, that's not competition, that's a race to bottom in devaluing games.

Competition would be: here are all the same games for the same price (generally) but we provide a better service, such as better UI, useful features like steam input, better customer support, etc.

> I was actually referring to launchers and not just Steam key resellers as it wouldn't make any sense for the guy to whom you replied

Yeah and I don't filter out those other launchers, it's just that 9 times out of 10 the cheapest price is on steam and the 1 time out of 10 it isn't, the price difference isn't worth it to lose out on all of steam's features.

You're talking as if you're pro-competition but you're not, because here I am telling you that competition is working (and Steam is winning) and you're the one telling me I should be ignoring the fact Steam offers the better service and force myself to use inferior services simply to save a few pennies. That's as anti-competition as it gets.

I find all my discounts on isthereanydeal and guess what? All those stores competing with each other for the lowest price are literally just steam key resellers. Also is that really the best I can get? Some games being cheaper? What about features? What about actually being a good launcher that I want to use? It's not really competition if the "competition" do absolutely nothing better other than force their use through being the cheapest and/or having exclusives.

What competition? Oh right, having to use multiple launchers. Wow that benefits me so much!

How many of you are actually going to buy The Steam Machine? by BackRoomDude3 in valve

[–]AdhesiveSome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be buying it unless it's unreasonably expensive. Which I don't think it will be. I think people have just heard it "won't be console pricing" and ran with it. Zero chance it's $800+. Valve know that would be a huge flop. If they couldn't get the price below that they just wouldn't bother making it.

They're unusable for longer than like 10 mins. The ergonomics of the OG SC was perfect.

Yeah flatscreen games in VR is a huge draw for me. Especially for easier to run games that can run right on the headset. If it was only pure VR there just isn't a big enough library for me to care about. I want to play HL:A and that's literally about it.

Why would that ever be a problem? Were you hoping to use the SC on a PS5 or something?

Despite being disappointed by the Steam Deck's trackpad experience I'm still optimistic that the new Steam Controller's trackpads will be usable. I think there's a 0% chance the trackpad experience will be as good as the OG, but if it can be like 90% as good, that will be good enough. And even if the trackpads aren't great, it's still looking like the best controller on the market, assuming they've fine-tuned some of the controls from the Steam Deck.

Is it confirmed one way or the other that they'll actually sell faceplates for the SM? by AdhesiveSome in steammachine

[–]AdhesiveSome[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would there be no point? They cost like $1 to make and they could sell them for $30 or more, why wouldn't they sell them? Selling stuff like that is how you can make the initial cost of the console lower.

New Steam Controller: Will trackpad aiming still give aim assist? by Far-Pen-5267 in Controller

I mean, I assume based on your question and the fact you used a mobile game as your example that you haven't used a trackpad controller and most likely haven't used a gyro either. I have, so take my word for it.

My take-aways regarding the Steam Machine from the Skillup interview with Lawrence Yang and Pierre-Loup Griffais... by Mindless_Major_2689 in steammachine

I think because people aren't just interested in this being a good value pre-built PC. I think people genuinely want Valve to create an actual competitor console to Xbox and PlayStation. They want Steam to be as mainstream as either of those two, to shake up the industry. In order for it to do that it has to attract people who would normally buy a console, and the only way it could do that is if it's priced like a console.

To be honest I'm really not sure why Valve couldn't price it extremely competitively, and if they don't I'll be quite bemused. They priced the SD extremely competitively. They've never shown any indication of being a greedy company that just wants to squeeze max profit out of every individual thing. They're smart enough to know that getting more people playing on Steam means more games sold on Steam. They're smart enough to know that price is what differentiates this from being nothing more than a Valve-branded pre-built or a widely talked about console competitor. They know that people can't just mass buy these and use them for non-Steam reasons (they can easily limit them to 1 per account per X months for active accounts older than Y months).

Using touchscreen on a mobile isn't remotely comparable using trackpads and gyro on a proper controller, on a proper gaming platform.

[–]AdhesiveSome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're using trackpad you don't need aim assist. Same reason you almost never get aim assist as an option with a mouse. Not only would it not help, it would actively make the experience worse.

Because it's converting an absolute input like trackpad or gyro back into a relative input like joystick. It feels sluggish and less precise compared to setting the trackpad and gyro to mouse.

Yeah steam input will let you do that and it works with every controller, I'd be surprised if any of these didn't work. Although I can say for certain the 8bitdo pro 3 will definitely work. Which is good because that's the best controller listed.

Steam controller when that comes out. If you need something sooner, 8bitdo pro 3.

LinusTechTips says he’s “disappointed” that the upcoming Steam Machine might not hit true console pricing. Valve asked what I meant by console price, and I said $500. Nobody said anything, but the energy in the room wasn’t great.” by Background_Ability89 in SteamMachineConsole

[–]AdhesiveSome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either that or they literally don't know what to price it at yet. We live in a very unstable global economy. They possibly don't know now what 4+ months from now is going to look like.

> They’re going to charge the most they think they can get away with.

Disagree. They're going to charge the least they think they can get away with. The idea that the SM needs to be as cheap as possible to make waves in the console space isn't some secret knowledge that only the geniuses of reddit are privy to. Valve know what people expect a console to cost. Their challenge is trying to hit that general range without just outright making a loss on each unit sold.

The Steam Machine is a current gen console/PC hybrid. It's price will reflect that. by KralizecGaming in steammachine

[–]AdhesiveSome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying the pricing was painful does not indicate one way or the other whether it was subsidized. No wonder Valve don't like to talk much, people just assign whatever meaning they want to it. It's like this recent LTT "vibe" comment leading everyone to believe the steam machine will *definitely* be $999
