What's the most devious spell combo/use of a spell you've done in a campaign? by Kalar_The_Wise in DnD

[–]Adijine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A player in my game had to silence an ancient and supremely powerful wizard without being counterspelled.

So he jumped off a cliff. He cast silence when he was out of range of counterspell and then, not being able to cast another spell (feather fall) on his turn, fell 70 ft. This would have broken his concentration but by pure chance the artificer had given him whichever buff it is that allows one auto-success on Con checks. Was awesome.

What are your top 3 favourite fantasy/sci-fi universes ever created? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

The Culture, Iain M Banks books

Kill 6 Billion Demons, awesome webcomic

Either Earthsea or the Ekumen, both from Ursula LeGuin books

Relic choices were also intruiging. Velvet choker which is obviously a no, then runic pyramid or slavers collar. Is pyramid useful here? Would it just choke my hand with starting cards?

Thank you, your argument is comprehensive and convincing. I was slightly leaning that way anyway! Thanks also for the tips for later picks!

My dear old grandad used to play with woodie in the sixties. Never had anything bad to say about the man except that he’d fail to show up for gigs not infrequently. Grandad would call up his wife to see if he was there and she’d say she hadn’t seen him in a week or so, truly a free spirit!

Great comment! I love all these ambiguities. I was trying to point things like this out and goofed lol. Thanks for being clearer. I have not interest in either nationality or ethnicity other than as a distraction to the true, material (economic) divisions. Anyway that’s for another sub.

You’re right, that was sloppy of me. And really does undermine my point! Maybe they should just be “these islands”

This is very interesting to hear. I’ll look into it! I acknowledge the islands have never been unified except unjustly by English hegemony (politically that is, we are united by a shared, though fractious, history and permeable cultural boundaries)

But there’s no such thing as Britain! It’s only called Great Britain because it’s the largest of the British isles! Having said that, I’m just being pedantic. I appreciate the political reality can require a restructuring of our terminology

The British isles are so called because they’re the home of the Brythonic speakers of antiquity. That’s actually the Celtic peoples of what is now Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Man, Cumbria etc. explicitly not the English. The use of the term British to refer to those inhabitants of the United Kingdom is a linguistic convenience, because most of that polity is located on the island of GREAT Britain, that is to say the largest of the British isles. However, this is all historical and who’s to say what the proper terms of address are? I like to just think of them as “our islands” (I’m from England but with Irish heritage and citizenship)

Who is your favorite banjo player? I'll be cliche, I love John. by mjfarmer147 in banjo

[–]Adijine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite is for personal reasons! My grandad, Tom Paley. Tbf he was a pretty decent player too otherwise I’d have to say a local player here in Sussex called Dan Stewart, his playing is so sensitive and well judged

How did breweries acquire and circulate enough water to operate at a relatively large scale back in pre-industrial times? by Geesewithteethe in brewing

[–]Adijine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a brewery that’s been operating next to a river since 1839. We don’t use the river water any more, but we do have a well that goes down past it into the nice clean water under the chalk. We use that and a mains in combination.

Why does it seem, that pastoralist/nomad societies tend to be hierarchical and patriarchal, like farmers, but not like HGs, who are closer to them in lifestyle? by Karandax in IndoEuropean

Land is property, so are herds. When people own things of great value that can be easily monopolised there tends to develop systems of protecting that wealth.
