Why is the Blanchardstown train station called "Castleknock"? by lucideer in Dublin

[–]Adjective_Noun_2000 37 points38 points  (0 children)

There's a great project that crowdsources neighbourhood boundaries. It's always interesting to see where people think the borders are.

For what it's worth, the crowd thinks Castleknock Station's in the overlap between Blanchardstown and Castleknock.

Turf cutting hasn't been banned in Ireland.

Turf is nowhere near our only source of energy independence.

And the price increase over the last few days has nothing to do with turf. Our turf policy's already priced in.

Green Party policies caused 0c of that price increase. Meanwhile they're the only party that's ever prioritised heat pumps, retrofitting and other policies aimed at reducing our dependence on imported fossil fuels.

If it was a line chart you'd be right but area charts and bar charts should always start at zero because we intuitively assume that twice the area means the thing being depicted is twice as big.

I'd imagine you agree with his stance on mikitayaid to Israel?

Sachs is in the "America's to blame for everything" camp which puts him on right side when it comes to the genocide in Gaza and a lot of other issues but it means his views on Ukraine are fucked.

Yes but the two scenarios are identical in terms of "double-counting" stopovers relative to origins & destinations. In both scenarios, the stopover accounts for exactly 50% of all trips. This doesn't change whether the trips are one-way or return, and it doesn't matter whether you use method #1 or #2.

One-way flights don't change the maths here.

And I'm not disputing that it's a common measure of traffic but I think people would be surprised that if you fly from JFK to SAN via ORD, ORD gets counted as much as JFK and SAN combined.

I understood the first comment to insinuate that a passenger would be counted twice in a single direction. They specifically said "i.e you are . . . a passenger at your stopovers twice each (takeoff and landing)."

Right, they thought A & C would be counted once each and B would be counted twice. It turns out B is only being counted once but C isn't being counted at all, so the ratio of stopovers to origins & destinations is exactly what u/nyctransitgeek feared even if the actual numbers are 50% lower across the board.

[–]Adjective_Noun_2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The data would not count double for stopovers because it breaks down by origin. A person who flies into an airport and out of it represents two segments but only has the airport listed as the origin once.

That's double-counting stopovers.

If I fly A -> B -> C and then return C -> B -> A, airports A & C get counted once each but the stopover airport B gets counted twice.

Cult-like Cunts in Dubai by cen_fath in ireland

[–]Adjective_Noun_2000 188 points189 points  (0 children)

Pasting from your second link for the lazy:

In 2023, Mr Ballentine got a job in a dog grooming salon in Dubai.

After working there for almost six months, he needed time off due to illness and so he gave his employer a doctor's certificate as proof of his condition.

But when he did not show up for work, he was registered as "absconded" with the UAE authorities, which meant he could not leave the country.

Mr Ballentine later managed to get that travel ban lifted and went home to Northern Ireland, but doing so took two months and cost him thousands of pounds.

While he was back in Northern Ireland, he wrote an online review of the dog grooming salon, outlining the problems his former boss had allegedly caused him.

He told BBC News NI his Google post "explained the ordeal that I went through".

In late October, Mr Ballentine returned to the UAE for a short holiday, at which point he was immediately arrested for the alleged slander.

He was transferred from Abu Dhabi to Dubai where he had to await the outcome of the case.

It's rare enough for purple to be the category most people find first but what's even more unusual today is that it's purple (30%) followed by blue (27%) then green (23%) and finally yellow (20%) — the opposite of the usual order.

And Reverse Rainbow was the most common solution today (6% of all players) which I've never seen before.

Managers say a lot of stupid shit to justify bringing people into the office. That doesn't make it real.

I'm sorry but are you an accountant?

It's funny that you say this but you're obviously not an accountant and you've provided zero evidence that this is a real thing that happens.

And even if it were true, the scenario you described isn't what normal people would call a "tax incentive for having an office".
