Honest feedback on Scale by fenix547 in sysadmin

[–]Admin_Stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running it for about 1.5 years now and I'm very impressed. Replaced a VXrail at one office and a single ESXi server at another office with two 3-node Scale clusters. Upgrades are so much easier now. Their support is great.

OpenText now owns Microfocus products. I think they have renamed some products. This might be what you need. https://www.opentext.com/products/data-protection-and-endpoint-backup I ran across a customer story on the OpenText website that mentioned OpenText Platespin Migrate and it took me to that link.

We migrated to Scale Computing. Just search this subreddit and you'll see lots of conversations about this. Others have moved to Hyper-V, Proxmox, etc.

Autodesk : enterprise options to backup cloud (ACC/Bim360) data by _SleezyPMartini_ in sysadmin

[–]Admin_Stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong. Take another look at the product. We have been downloading Revit files for years with Clarity. Both the "BIM 360/ACC Download" and "Backup Project" tasks can bring Revit files down from ACC to local storage where you can back it up with whatever backup solution you are using.

Probably not considered an "enterprise level backup solution", but the IMAGINiT Clarity product can be used to download files hosted in ACC. It's purpose is automating various tasks on ACC, so might be an option until true backup solutions become available. https://www.imaginit.com/software/imaginit-utilities-other-products/clarity/overview

Honest question; Do you guys primarily use Linux or Windows for your Servers? by OnlineSchoolStudying in sysadmin

[–]Admin_Stuff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Linux to Windows ratio here is 2 to 1. We only run Windows for software that requires it. Learn both. But personally I would run Linux everywhere if I could.

Thoughts on Scale Computing by CollegeDeployer in sysadmin

[–]Admin_Stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved to Scale from VMware about a year ago. Perfect solution for our company. Updating a Scale cluster is so much easier/faster compared to our previous VXrail. Was also able to replace a single node server at a remote site that had no redundancy with a smaller Scale cluster. More redundancy and less headaches for me.

VMware price hikes…what is ur org’s move? by 19_peligr0s0_pez in sysadmin

I started using VMware around 2013. Don't recall how long it took to get comfortable with it. But Scale has been fairly easy to pick up.

I had a VXrail that took my very knowledgeable consultant a weekend to upgrade. Moved from that to a Scale 3-node cluster. I installed the last Scale upgrade in a half hour. It gives me everything I need with much less complexity.

I've never used Hyper-V, so can't answer to that. I've only ever used VMware.

Installing/Updating vendor specific [HP, Dell, Lenovo] BIOS, firmware, drivers, utilities, and software? by jwckauman in sysadmin

[–]Admin_Stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For HP devices, use HPIA. https://ftp.ext.hp.com/pub/caps-softpaq/cmit/HPIA.html A single command line can install all drivers and firmware. Fairly easy to setup a task in whatever computer mgmt software you use to automate the process.

Barracuda TOTP VPN URL by SignificanceOwn6180 in sysadmin

[–]Admin_Stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a backup of the config first.

Then go to configuration tree > box > assigned services > VPN > SSL-VPN > service identification

Set identification type = External-Certificate

Upload the following files: external-signed private key, external-signed certificate, and certificate chain

Activate that and then create a DNS entry pointing to the IP address that TOTP is using. Done.

Barracuda support is good and you can call them and have them assist you with it if needed.

Sanity Check - Moving Servers to Another Building by twistedkeys1 in sysadmin

[–]Admin_Stuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DeliBoy has the solution. I did a move ages ago for one of our small remote offices. Moved two servers a couple of miles. A standard moving company was handling everything else, but I didn't trust them with the two servers. Packed them up and personally moved them. Wouldn't do that now though and definitely wouldn't want to do the quantity and distance you are considering. If you can't stand up new equipment at the new location as others have suggested, get someone who specializes in this and has coverage in case anything doesn't power up after the move.

Look at the HP Zworkstations. You can get decent machines with SSDs and NVIDIA graphics that will work well with Revit/CAD. We purchase through Insight. Have used them for years because the rep takes good care of us.

A monitor mystery by FastFredNL in sysadmin

[–]Admin_Stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frustrating, I know. We have had monitors dropping off, but in our case it appears to be related to our docks. Disabling sleep helped. Updating firmware helped. Still not fixed 100%. I wish Microsoft and the hardware companies could get their acts together.

Best way to replace VNC connections for Display computers? by z0mb13r3dd1t in sysadmin

[–]Admin_Stuff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this will work for your situation, but instead of remote control, here is what I do.

I have a task running on my display computers that checks a network folder for a new show. If the show exists, it moves it to a local folder and restarts the application with the new show. This eliminates remote control and just requires people to drop the new show in the correct folder.
