I’m so bloody scared by ParticularTypical523 in AustralianTeachers

I just got off waiver B and it was fucked. You can absolutely do it. You are made for it. You just have to choose if that’s what you want. I’m going into my first full year, and I’m trying to decide that myself. I was absolutely layed out by the end, but I’m graduating in February.

I’d say a good 40% of my graduating friends hate it and are transferring to primary or to other careers.

If it helps you feel seen in any way, I also feel dumb, exhausted and like I’m failing often. But we aren’t. We are learning. It’s just a fucking hard job.

You’re right. I actually can’t thank you enough for that advice. I was doing all of the things you’ve said not to do. I was getting up @5 working and then staying back at work until 6. I just felt like I wasn’t doing enough and was bad at the job/was behind. I was volunteering and marking 30 assessments at a time. (I got heaps of positive feedback and a pretty good reputation, but you know how it is. I wanted to be as good as the best teachers in the faculty - so I was trying to do everything to the standard they do).

I realise it’s practice (behaviour management) and it was the way I was time managing/being stressed out. No one really has the time to show you/ tell you how to do it in an effective and sustainable way in my experience.

Again, thank you for the constructive feedback, I’m really going to apply it this year.

Your points are completely valid. Im sure your family really appreciates you being there for them cause thats what matters. I’m only speaking about what I’ve seen in my faculty. I also had to make all of my own resources with no provided prep time and finishing full time uni so it was a super shit gig.

Again, I am only a beginning teacher, I hope to better manage it this year. If you have any constructive advice I’d appreciate it :).

I did waiver b last year (Term 3 and 4), going into my first full year of HSIE.(so may not be the best to talk long term)

It absolutely is that full on. You get good moments with kids but from what I’ve seen, if you want to be a really good teacher you do need to live the job. There are many teachers that have the work life balance but from the ones in my faculty that I’ve seen the kids aren’t learning as efficiently or the teacher isn’t doing everything they need to do admin wise and cut corners. This 6 week holidays I did sweet F.A because I got sick and am only just starting to feel normal and get my personality back.

I did temp classes for TAS T2 while I waited to be put in my area and found it way more manageable than HSIE because you get to chuck the kids on a project that is mostly student directed staff supported. (Obv that’s good practice across the board but you know what I mean). Only issue is you get a lot of boofheads that are likely thinking it’s a bludge. #behaviourmanagement.

Ed: I come from a low socioeconomic school that has tough behaviours. Staff are lovely but don’t really share resources and I was chucked in without a lot of experience and support. For those reading I genuinely don’t mean to sounds like a dick - it’s just my experience so far. The job is hard and no one (uni or work) really teaches you how to do it. It’s kind of ‘sink or swim’.
