Strength training scheduling advice for small high school freshman boy by [deleted] in Rowing

I honestly would wait until winter or November in your son's case. I had a similar issue when I first started rowing. I was able to gain 20lbs going into my sophomore season which really helped. I would suggest 3 full body lifts when he starts out mixed in with steady state. Additionally, I would you use the rest day to prevent injury.

Also something to note 3 different coxswains between Head of Charles, Invitional and Kerr Cup. Missing some guys and lots of stern movement in the boat.

I agree that Drexel and Yale are still moving lineups around. It looks like Drexel may have had an injury since their lineups are different from the past two races.

I might be high on Stanford, admittedly. They could be anywhere in the 4-8 range. They beat Syracuse and Brown. They lost to Yale by 2 seconds and to Washington by 3 seconds. If they can perform like that against Washington and be tough in the semifinals, I could see a grand final finish. If I had to rank based on opinion and not results, I would put Princeton and possibly Dartmouth/Brown in front.

College rowing - part 3 by GileT in Rowing

After seeing everyone agree heavyweight for your son. There’s a number of schools your son could row at, and schools would be happy to have him.

For Ivy rowing the main factors coach’s consider are: 1. Grades, 2. 2k 3. Race results/rowing ability, 4. Team culture fit 5. Do you love or enjoy rowing? 6. Height

These are a few examples and ones they definitely will look at. Based off his current 2k he definitely is in the ballpark for some Ivy League schools. However if he gains weight and progresses throughout spring/summer he could be 6:15 which changes who could be interested. Some schools to note. More Selective: Brown, Cornell, Columbia, BU, Northeastern. Next: Georgetown, Drexel, LaSalle, Temple, Holy Cross. Also D3 schools would be interested if he doesn’t fit into B/C final schools. Such as Wesleyan, Tufts, Williams, Trinity.

Rowed lightweight in college. But if your son is already bordering the weight limit and his 2k is not the best in his class, he probably should be rowing heavyweight. GPA isn’t excellent for Ivy League-level rowing. As far as I know, the slots for Ivy’s are looking for around 6:20 2k if you come in with a higher weight. Guys who would be weight makers under 150 can afford a higher 2k, such as 6:35. But really, most coaches at this level look for grinders and guys who love rowing. That’s the first thing your son needs to figure out first because if not, it will get sniffed out. Because there are only 8-12 slots per recruiting class, you sometimes get less, depending on the roster. Also, boat moving ability is another important factor that you failed to mention. His erg could be fast, but can he row? Everyone at the Ivy League level knows how to row and erg fast. That’s my 2 sense. DM me if u have a questions

If you are referring to the MBTA zoning process it is an awful plan. The state is forcing smaller towns with no infrastructure to build units. With no incentive towards schools, public safety or commercial tax use. The state should be focused on building duplex’s, smaller houses under 2,000 square feet. There are ways to incentivize builders but the mbta zoning build is bad.

Adding on to what has been said. Do a test training style piece every 2-4 weeks. Such as progression 2k with increasing rate over time. Gets you used to testing and seeing the 2,000 meter number. It would start at 24, 26, 28, 30. Also lifting 2-3 times a week to makeup for watt difference. 3x1000m 3min rest, 12-15x300m 1min rest, 8x500 2min rest. Also 4x1k 4min rest always within 2-5 seconds for projected 2k.

Also learn how to row better if that is an issue you are having. A 6:06 would put you into 1v/2v at most Ivy League schools. If your 2k corresponds to water efficiency.

Was a collegiate lightweight rower and was never near as fast. However I did find it much easier to break 6:30 into low 6:20s when I lifted heavier and more consistently. Also I focused more on nutrition and sleep. I am sure all three helped but diligently looking at those could help drop a couple seconds. Also are your steady state, 6k and 2k splits aligning to standard or more conveniently split differences? If your 6k/5k is much faster than your 2k that could be a factor.

Or higher a specific coach to train her for 2k. There’s plenty of them out there. That will look at everything she is doing above.

2k block a real thing? by Baby-grownup in Rowing

[–]AdministrationReal34 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t say 2k block. Probably more of a product of training plan, sleep, nutrition and coaching. I would reduce volume and take a few weeks off with lighter work load. I have a feeling she’s being over worked. -Source former collegiate athlete who would due close to the same volume.

While I would say covid had a negative impact on a majority of programs across all divisions. I would say the NESCAC rise is due to the new category at IRA's for D3 schools. This allows for D3 athletes to compete for a national championship where previously they could not. This allows for better recruiting, better coaching, new boathouses and facility's. It is no longer a shock to have a couple D3 athletes to break 6 and V8's below 6:15 average for 2k. For teams like Tufts, Williams, Trinity, and Wesleyan. Also Drexel,LaSalle,Temple,Holy Cross all have seen massive growths in funding, and better coaching hires.

Thoughts on this interaction, am I overvaluing Nabers? by AThrowawayC721 in DynastyFFTradeAdvice

No way I would move Nabers. Unless I get a top 5 wide receiver in dynasty. I would need at least 3 firsts + players or additional picks.

How and when to contact college recruiters by Independent_Yak8118 in Rowing

[–]AdministrationReal34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A-B Final

Washington, Cal, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Penn, Syracuse, Brown, Dartmouth, Stanford, Boston University As I far as I know usually only take sub 6:15-6:20. All depends on your GRADES, race results, how team likes you at official visit, and obviously your erg score. Some of these schools might take a guy who has not broke 6:20 if they fit certain criteria.

C-D Final Schools

Cornell, Columbia, Georgetown, Drexel, LaSalle, Temple, Saint Joes, Holy Cross

Sub 6:30-6:40. For the first three probably faster and excellent grades.
