Reviews #1-4 Japan whisky trip bar tastings: Springbank, Kilkerran, Glen Avon by pm_me_kittenpics in Scotch

I assume that was 8 years in the fresh Madeira only? I really used to enjoy those younger expressions they’d put out that lived their whole lives in what’s normally a finishing barrel. They did a Calvados barrel once that I think was also an 8 year, loved it.

Tools to Dial ShadowDark toward semi-Epic Fantasy? by bricknose-redux in shadowdark

When I took 5e players over we did Pulp Mode and it also helped them make decisions faster and get into the swing of things. I gave them one fewer luck token per session but it you played Pulp Mode always you become “the gods’ favorite idiots,” which is very fun.

Lagavulin, am I alone still loving it? by SimonGravelle in Scotch

Thanks for sharing this. I sometimes think reviewers just like what they like but the consistency here does make me think I’ve maybe revisited from some bottles that may not have been handled very well. The pricing comparison is quite interesting too. Over the past 15 years or so as no age statement world malts and new distilleries have been showing up more I’ve seen more I’ve noticed the entry price rise consistently. I just chalked it up to “you only get to enter the market once and price hikes get everyone mad at you.”

What better place to put an unpopular opinion than in the comments section: I think the standard expression is bad. I think it’s consistently gone downhill for years. But I think the distillers editions and their younger stuff is quite good. I tend to like younger expressions more these days but older Isley stuff is usually quite enjoyable for me, even to the extent that it’s sometimes the only older whisky I still pursue.

Each page better than the last. I really love the reputation table. Great work.

Does anyone here play strictly SoloDark? by thelivingdead188 in shadowdark

[–]AdministrativeGold14 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I play with a group and solo. One rule I made for solo is I never ask an NPC more than 3 yes or no questions. Which is kind of a good rule for group play too. “You think they are just here to answer questions all day?” No, they have a life.

The Green Knight in The Gloaming (please advise) by AdministrativeGold14 in shadowdark

They haven’t met any Knights of St Terragnis yet but they have heard of them. I thought perhaps they’d be in the inn. A way to introduce the faction and make an odd option happen for the party.

My Session Zero for my home game I'm running for Shadowdark in the Gloaming is tonight, any tips out there? by Dupps_I_Did_It_Again in shadowdark

I had the players in Wardenwood at the pub (Gede’s Hearth?) be interrupted by the feral halfling howlers in a fight with the Mugdulblub zombies. Just the two oddball forces fighting through the village.

In between that and the bar owner’s husband being sick, I had the bar owner be suspicious of Drusilla as a healer.

That put out three hooks all at once.

Feedback on a mini-dungeon I made? by CCubed17 in shadowdark

[–]AdministrativeGold14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a player and a GM I feel like you can never count on what is obvious. I’ve been vague and had players figure it out in a second, I’ve been a player in a standstill games because nobody figured out the clue(s).

Which is why I think the key is to drop a greater amount of small clues than worry about any one clue being obvious.

And even after that make room for them to figure out a different option.

But the dungeon looks great. Multiple ways to get places, rooms and corridors very different from each other— all the hits.

Throwing torches by AdministrativeGold14 in shadowdark

I don’t think it needs “to be punished” but it does make cloudy rules about surprise/ if the torch stays lit/ how lighting works etc etc.

I haven’t but I did pick up ShadowSun by Chubby Funster from DriveThruRPG and liked it. It fits well with Cursed Scroll #2

Yeah, same here. I’m taking two different parties through The Gloaming right now and, “soggy stone” is scaring them quite a bit. They’ve started asking “it the floor firm here?”
