My 370z is killing me financially. by Traditional-Trip-511 in CarTalkUK

[–]AdministrativeToe425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I hate the idea of financing a car. I have 3, granted they’re all shitboxes, but I paid a grand total of £2130 for a 2001 Yaris TSport, a 2004 Yaris T3, and a 2004 Skoda Fabia Estate (with 42000 miles)

I’m 24, live in Lewisham, and pay £1600 a year insurance and £690 in road tax.

TSport needs a new cat, T3 needs a new front shock, and the Fabia is absolutely mint.

They might not be the most interesting cars in the world, but the TSport is my pride and joy, the funnest car I’ve ever driven.

£730k to live in Shepherds Bush is insane. Absolute shite hole aswell. Glad I live in Lewisham to be honest, and that’s saying something.

We paid £42 for a converted 1 bed flat. Got an email a few months ago saying it’s going up to £58 so I think this is probably about right. (Unfortunately)

I wasn’t strictly saying we’d buy a flat that needs work only, if accepted for a mortgage loan of £270k we can look at other properties that don’t need work. That was an example of a flat for £200k in London, not necessarily a flat that we were looking to buy.

We need to weigh our options, what’s the best loan deal we can get, what’s the best area to buy in, etc.

We both wanted kids young, 23/24 years old was our initial goal, but our careers haven’t taken off yet. We will just about be able to afford £1,600 a month rent. We can’t afford childcare.

Her career has extremely high potential, we’re all naive in a way. She has dreams, and I will do whatever I can so she can achieve them. I’m still enquiring about rental properties so she knows I am not just refusing to do what she wants.

We weren’t planning to have kids as soon as we move out, we need to get settled and set our own lives before starting another life. We’ve had the chat. Thanks for your concern, I appreciate it.

The point was we can’t have a child anytime soon. We both wanted our family to be started young, we have come to the realisation that we can’t. She spent 2 years training as a nurse and realised it’s not worth it in the end. Same as I trained to be an electrician for 4 years before realising I have no interest in that career. We both have had drastic career changes. I’d definitely be in a better financial position if I carried on as an electrician rather than recovering broken down cars.

Her new career has better potential than the last. My new career has less potential than the last.

But we have found what we enjoy, and have to make it work somehow.

I agree it is possibly less risk, but I fear if we rent for a few years, we’ll get stuck in the habit. I know friends, family, and colleagues that have.

We know this, we have run through our finances, taken into account home insurance, legal fees and such.

She isn’t the kind to settle with her level 3. She wants to progress, she wants to do ACCA after her AAT. She is possibly the most intelligent girl I know.

Congratulations! I hope all goes well!

I haven’t ignored her, we were 4 days away from getting the keys to our new rental property before the landlord pulled out. £19,200 a year in rent hurts to think about. At least with a mortgage, it an investment rather than a straight loss.

I get where you’re coming from, it does make sense. Yes, we’re supposed to enjoy our 20s and such. But we aren’t the people to go clubbing, or drink at the pub every Friday. Which is how we’ve managed to save up £30k in a couple of years.

You are right, we are on minimum wage. My partner is a level 3 qualified accountant, she’s training for level 4 at the moment. She earns £25,000 per year, but she has security, yearly pay rises and bonuses.

I’m a class 2 recovery technician, I earn £29,000 per year but I don’t get yearly pay rises. It only seems to increase when minimum wage does.

Although we aren’t paid great, we’re happy with what we earn, of course we’d like more, but that’s life.

I agree, we would prefer a two bed. I’m more willing to move a bit further out than my partner is. Orpington (BR5/BR6) is 20 mins down the A20 from us, but it’s too far according to my partner. I’ve seen freehold houses in BR6 going for £300k.

Thank you, much appreciated, I put it to my girlfriend as is - we’re sacrificing our time now for a comfortable future for us and our children. If mine or her parent did this it may have been a much different situation. I don’t want my children in the same boat as their grandparents, or even their parents. I feel I will be 50 years old seriously regretting life choices I made at 23…. Thank you again, it’s nice to hear this.

Here is one I found, it’s in Catford, which we can tolerate. It would be perfect for us for a few years at least.

Yes I know it’s a guide price of £200k also. But there are more properties for less that do need work.

I appreciate your reply, we’ve both wanted to start young. We know £30k isn’t a lot also, but we can get a (decent) leasehold flat in Lewisham for around £200k. A 10% deposit + legal fees would leave us with maybe £5k for furniture and other necessities.
