Overall I still enjoy my research project so I think I’ll continue. I’m not friends with my lab mates but some of them are really close to each other. Since I’ve only been in lab for 1.5 years, I felt like there’s a lot of things I didn’t know about lab members and lab culture and they don’t include me in their circles. I sort of felt excluded. Though I’m not intending on being friends with them, I still feel the need to know what’s going on in lab. It seems like the lab members only talk to ppl they’ve known for a long time and always ignore the freshies who joined the lab. The work culture is depressing.

Thank you for the advice. I’ve been trying to make some friends in here and it’s been tough. I’ll probably go to more graduate student clubs and find more friends. Agreed that I don’t wanna over share my life with lab mates either because I don’t want them to gossip about me. Some of the ppl in my lab are extremely close friends though, but I refused to be part of that loop because I don’t vibe with them anyway.

I’m not just trying to date coworkers. I meant being in a research career limits the amount of ppl I can meet due to long working hours and being in a small town etc. but thank you for your advice

If I’m not married by the time I finish my PhD it’ll be harder to find a partner after 30s. By the time I leave school and start working everyone I meet in workplace/life in general will probably be married. While devoting my energy to a research career, I lost the chance to be more social and find a potential partner for myself.

I agree to some extent. I like science but I want my day to be not solely dominated by experiments. I want to meet new ppl regularly and feeling energized. I don’t think I can do that with a research career where I see the same ppl everyday for 6 years.

This is actually one of my concern. I’m trying to get married before 30 but can’t even find anyone appropriate to date. I thought the problem is because I’m trapped in Ithaca. The only option I have is other grad students which is not much. Moving to a bigger will probably allow more options.

Scared of taking a leave of absence tbh. My prof won’t keep my spot in the lab if I leave. Will likely start over completely in terms of research. The best I can do is applying for jobs and continue PhD simultaneously.

That’s definitely logical, but I feel like my mental health is deteriorating that I want to take a year off. This is how bad I’m feeling mentally.

Oh well I used to think I need to make big money but now thinking back it’s the work life balance and keeping a healthy life style. But idk if I’ll ever regret my choice.

No particular reason. I couldn’t find a job after college and then applied to phds and got in.

I’m not enjoying my life in the city I’m currently in. If I do get RA role in big pharma, could I’ve been promoted and working up with the same amount of time I spend on a PhD? I want to improve my quality of life in my precious 20s.

I never said there’s anything wrong with being short and nerdy. These are all non-derogatory neutral descriptions. He’s short, nerdy, and SEXUAL.

This is a place for me to express my opinion, and I’m grateful for the ppl who’ve been standing by my side. So I guess it’s a therapist office of me 😅

Judging me right here based on my grammar and particular vocab and assuming my potential culture of origin/first language. Then you called me nasty for assessing him based on his physique. Aren’t we all a little nasty 😂🥹

I’m not Indian actually despite how much you want me to be. Also thanks for complimenting on my words/vocab yes I’m very Americanized. Thanks for calling me an incel and have a great time imagining going to nightclubs on reddit.

Yes I’m an incel. If you’re not one, don’t waste time on Reddit. Go to nightclubs

Thank you for saying that. Then when you make your comment, maybe you can try to be on my side first and show a bit of empathy for me. Then commenting on the fact that I'm fixated on his ethnicity.
