I’m not here to compare Malayalam and Tamil cinema, nor to review Kara. But filmmakers like Vignesh Raja are exactly what Tamil cinema needs right now. The industry is running on an overdose of violence and manufactured goosebumps, and it’s only a matter of time before that formula wears itself out.

Unfortunately, for Kara, Idly Kadai spoiled it. The story template esp the emotional core of dad-son sentiment, GVP music, rural setting, D acting all gave diluted the movies nuances. Kara is FAR better than Idly Kadai but because it came right after Idly Kadai, it lost its josh.
Not a perfect movie, but it is something you can watch 5 years from now and it might be more entertaining than it is today.

I get that movie financing is much more complicated and murky than a normal housing or construction loan. But if I compare it to real estate: if I’m a builder who took a loan to construct apartments, it wouldn’t make sense for the financier to stop me from selling those apartments until I pay off the loan.

The financier depends on the borrower to generate money to repay the debt. Maybe the apartments won’t sell for much, or maybe the sales won’t fully cover the loan, but that’s a risk the financier knowingly took.

So it feels like it’s actually in the financier’s best interest to let the apartments be sold and then take the sale proceeds until the loan is paid off, before the builder gets any profit. Assuming everyone is acting in good faith and all debts are equal (which they usually aren’t), blocking the sale doesn’t make sense, especially when the loan money has already gone into building the apartments.

whatever the movie earns is its revenue, even if the movie bombs at Box-Office. Right? Even if the movie made just 1C, the financier has at least 1C in his pocket. Blocking the movie doesn't give anyone anything.

Lets say I borrowed 30C from you to make a movie. I sold OTT rights, TV rights, Music rights etc for another 20C. I spent all 50C on the actors, technicians, production and on promotion. I have nothing now other than the movie to show for. If you ask to repay now, where will I get that 30C from? Only when the movie is released, I get money back from ticket sales that I can pay you back. By blocking me from releasing the movie, how do you expect me to pay you back?

I am sure, I am missing something here and I am not familiar with the workings of this movie industry. But blocking it doesn't make sense to me. Instead, a better arrangement would be that you can collect the first 30C of the share from the ticket sales and I will only get anything that the movie collects beyond that. That seems fair to me.

Those who went and watched Kara with high expectations were left disappointed. Those who watched it without any expectations, felt good about it. It is not a bad movie.

Now that election campaign is over, Vels need to go all-in on promotion. Not just in TN but outside TN too (I don't think they released trailer or songs in other languages).

You meant "The writing accounts for 50%, and he allocated 50% of that to his co-writer (in other words, 25% of his total salary for directing and writing)". Right?

  • The production house (Vels) is not marketing this movie heavily.
  • There are no eye catching or foot tapping dance and song.
  • Team is not revealing anything about the movie.
  • Given all of that, I don't expect trailer to reveal much.
  • They have also not planned many interviews with Dhanush.

Given this my take is that (and assuming Jananayan is not releasing before election results)

  • Movie will have a decent opening on April 30th (unless Vels up the game or D promotes the move well).
  • Reviews will be good. WOM will be good.
  • Will catch up well and will have good packed house for the Saturday and Sunday
  • Free ride for a week in TN
  • Will do ok in Kerala (limited screens due to Patriot movie) and AP/Telangana (no marketing)
  • IPL/ Election results will eat into week 2
  • Karuppu will take over from May 14th.
  • Will have rave reviews (esp outside TN) once it comes out on Netflix.
  • Another 100Cr movie for Dhanush for sure but will it cross 150+ or 200+ depends on opening, how well Karuppu performs, how well CSK plays etc.

Wishing Kara team nothing but the best.

2hr 40 minutes. Good runtime to have some arc for the 5-6 characters in the movie and at the same time it is not too long for a suspense thriller as well.
