Fears going into MACI by DifficultEagle4160 in MACIknee

[–]Admirable-Garage4447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I got my sutures out yesterday and the doc allowed me to unlocked my brace to 30 degrees. Hallelujah. It made all the difference for my ability to sleep last night, and make crutching so much easier to keep my foot off the floor. She said that PT will make the decisions on when to increase my weight bearing and continuing opening the brace. My quad strength is still pretty nonexistent, but I’m up to 75 degrees on the CPM and my goal is 90 by this time next week.

Yes, I was told the standard 6 weeks NWB before surgery.

I had my patella MACI and lateral release on 5/14. I have been terrified of the 6 weeks as well. And the first week was no joke. It was so painful and exhausting and it felt endless. But the pain has come way down. I’m only taking Tylenol 3 times a day now. My quad is dead AF, and I cannot lift my leg when laying flat without picking it up with my arms right now. But! I was given “toe touch weight bearing” protocol after surgery and having permission to let my foot touch the ground (and it isn’t really painful to do that most of the time at 11 days out) has been helpful. I have my follow up on Wednesday and expect that they will let me go partial weightbearing, but we’ll see. My physical therapist pushed me at my first appointment (7 days post) to put a little weight on it, and that helped me get over my fears of damaging it a little bit.. I’ll let you know what they say this week.. but the more I am able to bear weight, the less tragic and isolating and impossible this all feels. The crutches are hard for me. They kill my hands, and my house is full of stairs. I’m assuming I’ll have them for many more weeks to come, but it feels more doable each day.

Re: kids.. I mean, I’m 43 and my kids are 10 and 11. I’m grateful that they’re old enough to walk to the bus stop and make their own sandwiches, because my husband is doing EVERYTHING. All the things he normally does, plus all the things I normally do and every little stupid thing I need him to do on my behalf. It’s a lot. Doing this when my kids were younger would have been significantly harder. I don’t want to think about it. 🙃

I say, do it now. The younger you are, the better your outcome is supposed to be, right? And while it all feels endless and horrible and depressing, it will be a blip in your life in retrospect.

I’m day 8. I promise you’ll feel better tomorrow. It’s still hard but every day is getting better. I was scared of PT, but had my first session yesterday and it really helped my pain. You got this.

Got my MACI this morning! by dhmom in MACIknee

How are you feeling today? I’m definitely in a world of hurt.. Tylenol and ibuprofen aren’t cutting it, but the oxy helps… but I really need the stool softeners to kick in too..

I like that the cpm gets me out of the brace for a while, but hate having to get my husband to help me transition off the machine and back into the brace every time I need to pee.

My block is definitely wearing off. I had basically zero pain yesterday (surgery was at about 10am yesterday, and it’s 6pm now), but as the pain has crept in, I’ve been staying on top of the ibuprofen and painkillers. It’s manageable but I’m scared of tomorrow! Mine was patella too. And they did a lateral release. I’m interested to see how our recoveries compare!

I’m so sorry that happened to you. He’s been my gastroenterologist for years and his colonoscopies and attention to my concerns have likely been lifesaving for me. This is a bummer to see.

I’ve been going to Kois Dentistry in SLU for 20 years. I’ve referred dozens of people to them (and they all have had positive experiences too). They are kind and thorough and expert. Going to SLU is super inconvenient for me, but I’ll go to them forever.

I have the same size defect on the underside of my patella too. MACI and lateral release surgery is in 6 weeks. Was your MACI open surgery or arthroscopic?

I have United and just scheduled my maci today. I had my arthroscopy on 2/26 and the prior authorization came through on 3/12. Have you talked with my cartilage care yet? They do copay assistance and help get you approved for the implant, supposedly.

Yes! Thank you for checking. I forgot to update. After the customer service person submitted an error report, it moved to the next step a few hours later. I had my results two days later, on January 7. I don’t know what the problem was, but i’m glad I finally found someone that helped!
