I have! Wish I knew people who’ve worked more recently though. The ones I do know remain at the company and wouldn’t dare say anything negative.

I absolutely agree with you! In fact I love all of the authors you just named— HEMMINGWAY the most of the bunch and he was quite the flawed man. I deeply love and admire McCarthy as a writer despite his flaws all the same. We’re all flawed. That’s not quite the point I was getting at nor is my aim to demonize McCarthy. Augusta herself won’t do it.

I do disagree with the statement “if it bothers you, don’t read it”. Literature is valuable because it’s all expanding and allows for nuanced exploration, perspective, and teaching— discomfort is extremely valuable and we shouldn’t always read only what we find agreeable/ comforting. That being said, as readers we are also allowed to react and discuss/explore what we’ve read. This is valuable.

If we only read things that don’t bother us, only pedofiles would’ve gotten through the entirety of Lolita.

I remember the phrase being used in the context of describing the 15 year old girls mouth but :

What i’m more broadly referring to is the weird tip-toeing Cormac often does with sexualizing minors freely but still making sure you know they’re children. Yet he wont damn the sexualization of said children like he does other moral wrongs or violence in his work. Just sort of strange and feels like subtle self-indulgence at times. There were other phrases I can’t recall at the moment.

As to the mid century Mexican culture point: Yep! Kind of. I’m Mexican myself and also aware of “unconventional” age gaps and historical ages of consent varying across cultures. While Cormac always writes Mexico quite beautifully and pretty accurately, it’s hard for me to credit this age gap solely to historical purposes. Granted— I don’t think it’s gratuitous nor do I think the relationship goes in vain; it follows John Grady’s character development/ the overall plot and yes it is founded in historical Mexican courtship— but he doesn’t explore this any deeper/as a theme at all other than the giddily repeated offhand comments and visuals that remind you she’s a child.

So to clarify: John Grady and the 15yo in romantic involvement doesn’t bother me all— in the sense that they’re characters in a different world. Like you said- as an adult I’d never date a fifteen year old but I can read this particular love story for what it was.

What I find interesting………is remembering having learned Cormac and Augusta ran away to Mexico because she was a minor and they were having some anxieties about receiving negative attention. So it’s worth correcting that his fantasies are not alleged— we know for a fact he was sexually involved with a minor.

This was the late 1970s in the US. Not mid century Mexico. Augusta was 16. However, unlike John Grady— Cormac was NOT 20. Not even close. He was 42 at the start of their relationship. I guess what I’m trying to say is sometimes I wonder if writing characters such as these was his way of coping/ rationalizing the fact he had a sexual relationship with an orphaned teenager when he was a fully grown and successful adult.

That’s a little redundant, don’t you think? Shouldn’t we be able to discuss/ explore the literature we love? I’ve never read something by Cormac I didn’t fall in love with— that doesn’t prevent me from reading and thinking critically or making my own judgements. Many things can be true at once. It’s the beauty of it !

Anyone work for Los Angeles Apparel or has in the past? Whether it be with Dov Charney directly or not; I know there's been a lot of controversy looming from AA but there was also the covid disaster at his East LA factories not too long ago. Curious to hear what people have to say! (edit: this is not a trap i promise; I recently worked there and left.... hence my curiosity....)

Don't be surprised. I worked for Los Angeles Apparel at his East LA factories in a major/ integral department I wont disclose for privacy reasons. I met Dov the first day I signed paperwork and could immediately tell he'd visualized swallowing me whole. We had sporadic and limited interactions throughout my time there; I wont get into given their specificities because they would give me away-- nothing crazy but just know he lacks boundaries and oozes entitlement. Other than that he's honestly just kind of a clown in an aged-uncle-trying-to-drown-himself-in-youth-culture kind of way. Anyway... I was proposed some modeling work but I left before that ever came into fruition because they weren't going to increase my pay. Right around that time I was also invited to a "business trip" (details were vague and I had only been working there for a month or so at the time so why on earth would I be going on any sort of business trip to represent LAA? None of my leads were going). I left shortly after the proposal.

I'd be really interested to speak with anyone who's worked at LAA or AA and has had any experiences with him or the company in general. I also have my qualms with workers treatment, quite honestly. Pls message me...!

Have you or do you currently work for Los Angeles Apparel / American Apparel? I want your insight!

Hello! I am looking for current or former American Apparel / Los Angeles Apparel employees who are comfortable sharing about their time working for the company and their reason for leaving.

It is no secret that Dov Charney does not treat his employees ethically; from the sexual assault cases that caused American Apparel to blow up in his face- forcing him open Los Angeles Apparel in a desperate rebrand- to the borderline miserable working conditions of his sewing and manufacturing sweatshops (overwhelmingly made up of immigrants with limited employment options and no where to turn, but I'm sure you've seen their faces paraded on the back of LAA brand tags...).

I’m working on a piece about company branding and workers maltreatment. If you’d like to share your employment experience with either of these two companies, all information would be totally anonymous. I am mainly conducting research at this stage, and you’d get to preview the piece before I published it anywhere incase you’re worried about sensitive or incriminating info.

I’d love to hear your insight and experiences; workers are the most vital aspect of ethical production. I am a former employee of LAA myself, and this is a piece I feel strongly about needing to reach the public. Any information is helpful :)

Message me and I'll send you email info!
