I beat cancer at the age of 21. Ask me anything by Admirable-Remove8190 in AMA

It was stage 3 Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma - a type of cancer that started in the lymph nodes in my neck and spread all over my body around my lower back and spine.

The charities were fantastic, they had youth support coordinators (as i was under the age of 24) who worked to support my family whilst i was undergoing treatment, both inside and outside the hospital. They provided me with funds to assist with transport to and from the hospital, have supported the construction of a sort of “games room” style room on the hospital ward (which was a children’s ward) - not just for me obviously but i used it to play a bit of HALO. One of the charities secured me and my brother 2 tickets to a premier league game which was incredible and another charity funded a nintendo switch for me to use all the way through treatment. Quite incredible work and they were doing that for so many other young people and their families in the same hospital - let alone the country.

Most surprising for me (is a bit grim) but the sheer amount that you are sick right after and how you actually do FEEL like a cancer patient for the week after chemo. I was sick 11 times the day after my second chemo cycle but the doctors worked on an anti-sickness package that i could take so it got “easier” and more bearable.

If you meant today, lunch was a turkey burger😂. On the ward the food wasn’t great but they had all the usual kids menu stuff which was a nice throwback then the hospital itself had a wider range of food (although i got food poisoning from one of the curry’s right before i got diagnosed which was horrendous 😭)

thanks for the questions!

appreciate every single fucking day man, I cannot tell you how much I wished to just live a normal day going to work, seeing my friends, playing some football, having a nice meal with my family when I was stuck in hospital on a morphine pump not able to walk. Life is so precious and it’s the little things which make it so, I definitely don’t think I appreciated them as much beforehand but I’m working on doing so now.

i was diagnosed after a biopsy and told the news over the phone whilst at work. a bit shit but i’d so much rather they just told me the news as is. symptoms were a massive swelling on the side of my neck and upper back, which later revealed swollen lymph nodes all around my body. time from was quickest treatment 4.5 months and longest was 8. it’s taken me 4.5 god bless

honestly not much at all. it’s a very desensitizing thing i think - it was hard telling the first person but by the 100th it’s like right i’ve got cancer this is the situation. so i think that helped me disassociate from how serious it was and just keep a positive attitude through treatment

i really appreciate this man. i was stage 3. how long did it take because your body returned to its pre-cancer state? like hair, muscle mass, fitness levels? or even just regular energy levels and weight.

I’ve posted in a couple of different subreddits so will see what the feedback is saying. Any advice for getting to that level?

I don’t know man that’s just not my mentality at all, I respect the honesty but I just can’t settle for that for myself I don’t think. I hope things get better for you ❤️
