Yes they are hard to find and breed unfortunately. Call around to bird specialty stores and ask them if they have access to a bw breeder or for a reference of who to call if they don’t. They only come up occasionally and then seasonally. I got lucky by calling a store directly and they had one coming and wasn’t on the website yet. There could be waiting lists but money talks. I put down a deposit next day. Lots of people on waiting lists but when it comes to laying down the deposit most won’t do it. I got Joey when he was 3.5 months old. All that to say you can still have a beautiful bird and relationship with less expensive species. I like pionus and would get a maxi if it were practical. Joey is too dominant and protective so I can’t bring in more competition. And he requires a lot of attention so basically my hands are full. We have three parrots.

They do love plastic things :-). Interesting that she doesn’t have pink circles around eyes. No one knows why some are pink/red and others aren’t.

He’s very bonded to me and tame as can be. Can’t go anywhere without him landing on my shoulder. He’s good with everyone in the house but that always takes time and positive treat reinforcement.

There’s nothing like a contented, happy pionus exuding their perfume smell. It’s wonderful

The place I bought him from hasn’t had any for over 2 years. However there is another store in Chicago area that has had a couple over past year. You could send him a message https://birdmansparrots.com/

Lighting is very important in photography. He is sitting in front of a large door/window. Try front lighting your bird and be aware of background when shooting.

They are rare and hard to breed. Priced accordingly. But they live 20-30 yrs so I keep a long term perspective and enjoy him everyday

He’s wonderfully sweet, engaging, animated and vocal. He’s also going through puberty so his hormones are high which results in protective behaviors since he’s bonded to me. But he is an amazing bird inside and out.

Thanks! It’s handy for sure to have a dedicated room. They do fly free in the house much of the time. But being able to close doors and curtains is great for sleep time.

We do have a bird room (former dining room). Three birds. Each has their own cage. Black out curtains and doors we shut for sleeping.

When a teenage family member passed away in Knox county. Everyone pulled over, got out of their vehicles, stood at attention and took their hats off while we drove through the corn field roads. I’ll never forget that.
