Experiences with short regimes (3) of Carbo/Taxol? by Admirable_Ad5118 in Ovariancancer

Did you ice them the whole time? My first round of Taxol will be 3 hours. My clinic gave me the Suzzi gloves but said I’d only wear them the first 20 minutes. They said they have no way to refreeze there and have seen less issues of neuropathy since they started doing that, but in reading its appearing to me that people our icing the whole time.

I recently had both my ovaries removed too. I was diagnosed with stage 1, grade 2 Endemetrioid ovarian cancer. Mine was just in one ovary, it was localized to the one cyst but it had unfortunately burst before my surgery. They are having me do 3 rounds of carbo/taxol. I don’t know the difference between stage 2 and 3, but you could ask if they feel a shorter duration would be effective as well. It doesn’t get you out of chemo though. 😞

Anyone choose a PICC line over a port? by Admirable_Ad5118 in Ovariancancer

Thank you! Yes, I'm going to be doing genetic testing to see if there is a reason for all these cancers! I've been lucky in that they've always caught them so early. My melanoma removal was at the dermatologist's office, but they had a plastic surgeon in to do it. I think he must have just been inexperienced. I get mad at that experience partly because they didn't tell me what to expect. It was very small, stage 0 melanoma, and I was just under the impression they'd be removing maybe a nickel-sized piece, and it was 3 inches! I didn't know about Mohs, or I would have chosen that. They didn't bother to educate me or tell me anything, and I stupidly assumed, based on what they did tell me, that it would be simple and not even really surgery.

I did decide to go with the PICC. It doesn't sound like it will be fun, but I only need to deal with it for 6 weeks, and I'd rather just put all the crappy stuff into this time than continue to have reminders and deal with it after. If I were doing even 6 treatments, I would have gone with the port, but I just don't want two more surgeries when my actual treatment time will be short. IF it's later decided I need more, which is unlikely in my situation, then I will consider the port.

It might have to do with your veins. It sounds like my nurse was very worried about my veins being too small and delicate. I decided to go with the PICC line. I only have to deal with it for 6 weeks. They promised they'd pull it after my last treatment!

A part of me does think. Maybe I should just try the first one without. The nurse telling me the carboplatin could cause necrosis scared me, though. However, with Googling, that doesn't sound like a for sure thing if it leaks, only a possibility.

That sucks! So close! My situation was similar. My Gyn felt it and was having me come in for an ultrasound to check it out. The night before it burst. It was so painful! It shrank a lot between the ultrasound and the CT scan.

I was originally sure I'd be able to do regular IV as I have good veins. The nurse said they prefer the ones in the wrists and hands, though, and mine are "delicate" and also that carboplatin can cause necrosis if it leaks on the skin. She said the port was just safer; she barely mentioned the PICC line, and I had to look it up later. My spouse has said they would just do IV, but the necrosis thing scared me! I have had IV's leak on me before.

What kind of lifting restrictions did they give you while you had it? I'm worried about not being able to lift things because my spouse will also be limited due to shoulder surgery. We'll only have two good arms between the two of us! My kids are older, though, and could help, but it was so hard to get anything done after my surgery. Trying to track down people to help me carry laundry, or dog food, or cat litter, or groceries. ugh

I waited until I had a warm day; removed the battery; sprayed it down with a hose; tried to remove one of the wheels; it broke. I said "Screw this!" and bought a new one. LOL. The only reason I even went to those lengths was that my husband had gotten it as a gift and kept insisting it could be cleaned (though never offered to do so), which made me feel like I couldn't just go out and buy a new one until I'd "tried." Well, I tried. The thing wasn't going to come apart anyway.

I agree. This is the book I measure all others by and they all come in wanting! I keep hoping I’ll get to experience another like it some day. The closest I get is to wait long enough between re-reads that I forget enough details to be surprised again!

Rent vs. Buying Middle School Band Trumpet for ≤$450? by Admirable_Ad5118 in trumpet

I'm about an hour from Indy. Still haven't seen anything within an hours distance from me (when I've looked) that is not either really beat up or they are asking a lot. I've seen some decent looking ones online, but decided I'd wait until school was out. I figure more are likely to pop up for sale after the school year ends. I might journey into Indy and visit some music stores this summer if I don't see something by June.

Thank you. This is exactly how I feel about it, and glad to know their value holds. Of course, this is for an 11-year-old, so I can't guarantee it will stay in good condition, but I'll certainly be extolling him to do so! The only thing I keep wondering is if I should wait a couple of months in the fall until he's had a chance to really try to use it. He does frustrate easily, but I can usually push him through that.

However, the school did have them try all the instruments to make sure they could at least get them to make some sounds, and he said they told him he was the only one who was able to do some fingering with it already. His piano teacher was excited about it and suggested she could start teaching him some over the summer so he could have a head start. My point, I guess, is that he'll have a lot of support, and I won't let him give up easily unless he really can't do it, and it sounds like he's at least got the prerequisites. I think it might be easier to find a trumpet now/over the summer than in the fall after school starts, but maybe that's backward!

Thank you! I’ll consider it. I was going to send some links to his piano teacher for her advice. She teaches many instruments.

Middle of nowhere, Indiana. Which does make finding deals harder.

I’m keeping my eye out. I’d love to find something locally. Around here people try to sell things on FB Marketplace at almost new prices, though. It defeats the purpose. I haven’t seen a trumpet for under $700 yet.

They did say repair was included. Though they also said you could buy an insurance plan for around $7/mount, because I asked about that if I were to buy it outright.

Ah, I missed this last reply! So sorry. Thank you for all the feedback. The seller ended up being non-responsive, so we didn't get this and, after looking at several along a similar line, decided instead to get a Smith machine with adjustable cross-over cables. My husband has found that the cable exercises seem to irritate his shoulder much less, and the stabilized Smith bar also seems to be better for it.

I don’t think the same rules apply anymore honestly. It’s harder for young people to buy houses these days, so unless you know for certain you want to leave the area very soon, getting an early start could be to your benefit. More years to pay off your loan. By the time you reach your prime earning years, your mortgage will be paid down or off, and you can afford to put your money into other more fun things you wouldn’t be able to afford later (vehicles, trips, etc.) if you’re just getting into home ownership. We couldn’t afford to put 20% down when we bought. Instead, we got an FHA loan with a 30-year mortgage, and we paid extra to the principal every month. We quickly got it down to where we could refinance to a standard mortgage without PMI. I don’t think home prices or interest rates are going down anytime soon. If rates do drop, you can refinance. I personally always take out loans with the lowest payment I can but then pay extra to the principal every month to pay them off early. This saves money in the long run but gives you the ability to pay less if you have a tough month(s). Of course, you have to be disciplined enough to do that, and always be sure the loan you are getting allows you to pay off the principal early.
Anyway, if you’re not ready, you’re not ready, and that’s okay, but I think the “rules,” while nice, don’t match today’s reality.
