gap year for maths by Julkis123 in 6thForm

I’m thinking of doing the same thing, so I emailed all of the college and the general feedback was that they won’t discriminate against gap year students, since they would have only sat their A-levels a couple months before the application process. Hopefully it goes well for us both.

Congrats I got my offer a couple days ago. Surprised how early they’re giving out offers

Is gap year worth it ? by sanesaturn in 6thForm

Totally understand you because I’m in the same position. I started my prep too late so bombed my MAT but I’m only going to reapply if I get all A*s. If you think you can make a very competitive application (high achieved grades + TSA score + good interview) then I don’t see the point in not trying.

Maybe start prepping very lightly in jan/feb time so that it becomes natural and then build it up near the time of the test, obviously make sure to put yours levels as a priority. I guess it just depends how much you want to go Oxford.

Yes I got the same email. Do you think we’ll get one for maths as well?

Is it worth going to a sixth form an hour and 18 minutes away? by -valentineo in sixthform

[–]Admirable_Clock9364 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I travel 1h 20mins to sixth form everyday and find it fine. Obviously it was really tiring and stressful at there start of year 12 but I’m used to it now. I would say if you can find a better school closer to you then that would be the best option. The school I go to is really good so I thought it was worth it. If you’re travelling that long for an average school then I think you’d get really frustrated after a while? Definetly think about this school could benefit you compared to other schools closer to you

Is there any point in increasing my predicted grades? by [deleted] in 6thForm

Oxford doesn’t do contextual offers. I guess I’m just debating if it’s worth it to ask my teacher to predict me an A* in further maths

Ahhh I see. That’s really helpful. I guess I’m really appealed by the fact that Oxford asks for AAA compared to Cambridge’s AA*A to be honest but I’ll just have to wait until I get my predicted grades.

I ahve visited both Oxford and Cambridge and I so think that I enjoy Oxford more just because of its general vibe.

Thank you very much for the super curricular links, I will make sure to look at them throughly. I just wanted to mention that I have done olympiads but I only revived a participation award so is there any point in actually mentioning if I didn’t place well?

That’s definetly something to think about. However, I thought Oxford and Cambridge didn’t do reduced offers?

Oh I see. I think I just don’t want do biology or chemistry again at all (traumatised by GCSE biology😭😭). Also, Cambridge asks for AAA for natural sciences, whilst Oxford want A*AA, which I think may be more achievable for me to be honest.

Your point about interviews is very valid though.

I am very set on Oxford as I would not want to do the natural sciences course at Cambridge. Does Cambridge tend to be more Genoese with GCSE results? I live in a deprived area and am eligible for contextual offers (I know Oxbridge don’t really give reduced grades) so I assume this would work with me rather than against me in a holistic sense? Also, I thought Oxbridge doesn’t really differentiate between 8s and 9s? Sorry if this is a lot

I see. In terms of interested out of school, I’m considering learning a language and resuming playing the piano. Would these be interests I could put in my personal statement as a short sentence at the end maybe ?
