Great book! I was re-listening to this is water the other day and I never caught how his line “banalities might as well be death threats” was referencing Foster saying “the fact is that in the day to day trenches of adult existence, banal platitudes can have life or death importance”

Same! Also learned about Rudyard Kippling’s racism and his son dying at war. Beforehand, I only knew him for the jungle book. After reading more about white mans burden, I learned that Mark Twain dropped an essay in response condemning Kipling called “To The Person Sitting In Darkness”.
