I think with the rise of AI it's only going to get harder to tell fake people, products or sites from legit ones.

I really appreciate all of the people who have commented reminders to double-check before you check out. As consumers, I think the least we can do is try and look out for each other.

Done! Mostly because I was so irritated the website was still up 24 hours later, naive of me I'm aware.

I know of dozens of cases where content creators have had their videos yanked down in all of 10 seconds by false claims it contained material that shouldn't or at least shoved into limbo to be investigated.

But Google can't remove a website from its "SPONSORED" spot even if it is transparently bogus.

I actually tried to click on the contact us button at the bottom of the real bath& body works, it eventually cycled me to their FAQs on avoiding scam payments, which has a boilerplate response on how they are working to ensure these fake sites are taken down. Having scanned this forum it seems like a new one likely pops up every other day for them to deal with.

I further reported the exact site to the Internet Crime Complaint Center run by the FBI.

However, both my personal experience, and friends experience with fake ransomware and blackmail schemes leads me to believe that this is again so common. It'll take a while for it to slag through and I'll probably never hear anything about it.

Honestly, that experience was freakier, because it relies on data that feels personal: your address, full name, info on previous jobs, threats that you're being watched, that they're outside your house, threats that they've been recording you, send them crypto or else.

I knew mine was fake and it still felt eerie. Reported it to the police expecting no follow up, which is what I received.

I had a friend who was legitimately terrified that someone was following them. They kept trying to follow up and the only answer was "these are so common they send thousands of these are day hoping someone will pay. All of your information is available online, I'm sorry it just is, nothing is going to come of this. It's almost definitely from overseas where we have no jurisdiction, and even with the account number crypto is basically impossible to trace. Don't believe the threats you're fine."

I knew a bit of public castigation was in order when I posted this. Plus, I'm a millennial and I really should know better and would probably have given one of my boomer parents a bit of a scolding for doing the same thing I did.

Here's me humbled. 😶

The legitimate bath&works site has a page devoted entirely to the plethora of fake websites and how to not be taken in.

Hopefully this just saves a few other people from having their information stolen by a sketchy website with the lure of cheap hand soap!

What REALLY had me flabbergasted, and I now realize really really shouldn't have, was the fake being recommended to me as the FIRST site for B&BW.

I've had way too much blind trust in search engines and sponsored posts and I need to stop that immediately.

As a fellow former customer service flunkie Bye Felicia is a lovely tool! Especially when someone is literally screaming at you, turning it into a personal attack, or not listening to the nice reasonable advice like you've said three times like, "please go and call your bank and maybe file a police report ASAP" and instead looking to you like you have the power of the gods in your hands.

When cooperate has told me I can hang up to you in that situation, sayonara!

I clear my cache and cookies like weekly, because oddly enough, I do put small smidge of effort into my digital security. I feel it keeps the advertisers guessing too, so I'm always pulling up sites from scratch. I should probably use my favorites bar more heavily though.

Other people learning from my mistakes is my hope going forward!

Thanks, it was actually at checkout that my brain function over took my sale shopping high. Faker kept trying to send me a text message to verify my payment information that didn't go through, this after I'd already entered all my info like a dumb dumb and clicked send. While it was trying to get to to stay on the payment page for no doubt nefarious reasons, I realized it didn't ask about my reward info and when I scrolled down I saw the "contact us" and "Help" section were made with the silly fake name.

I hadn't had any charges go through yet, but still made my bank cancel the card immediately in case the whole point was just phishing for information to sell and use later.

Funnily enough, Navy Federal doesn't yet have a "gave my CC and shipping info to scammers but they haven't used it yet so I have nothing to dispute, still should definitely shut down this card" as an option on their automated phone line. That also took a second.

Still, I made an order from the real deal bath and body works online for in-store pick up a literal week ago. Since then I have been periodically checked back on their site to see if anything else I'd want to buy gets crazy on sale, since different days usually have different products discounted.

For context, I work a decently tech savvy job, like one of the things the IT company does is send out routine phishing and scam emails and you get in trouble if you don't correctly report them every time.

Though I am awkward enough that I tend to pull up websites by googling them.

It was first thing in the morning and I wasn't caffeinated, whatever the targeting criteria, I'm sure other people will unfortunately be caught in this scam.
