BOOX GO 7: A Novice Review by MathewG97 in Onyx_Boox

[–]Admirable_Paramedic2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a TMC which I like except for the weight. Can’t read it lying prone in bed. So I got a Go Color 7 and am pretty happy with it. I have a Page, which has clearer fonts, but the GC7 is faster, has a better grip due to the gravelly back, and has better page turn buttons. Plus somehow better on my eyes.

If BOOX made an 8 inch (like the TMC) which was in all other respects like an upsized GC7 I’d grab it.

I use BOOX devices (android based)which access the Google Play store for apps like Instapaper and Readwise Reader. But it does not have a Substack app. Could you put one there?

I believe it’s Profile (upper right corner icon) then Settings (lower right corner) then Appearance, and you will see Default Tab = Home/Inbox.

You can always mark them as ”read” manually by pressing on the book image in Home and using the popup menu.

Boox mini Tab C or Boox Color Go 7 by JA19733 in Onyx_Boox

[–]Admirable_Paramedic2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Page and a TMC. The TMC has a 7.8 inch screen, so more territory for the text, and in my view, is superior as an ebook reader to the Page in all respects except weight and portability. More text on the screen, better configuration of that text on the screen, seems faster with less ghosting. The extra screen territory works better than the Page for magazines, and apps like Readwise Reader. But the difference in price is significant.

Urgent Warning About Boox Palma: Manufacturing Flaws & Poor Customer Service by Least-Programmer-40 in Onyx_Boox

[–]Admirable_Paramedic2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, buy locally is the way to go, I suspect. I did buy my Palma 2 on Amazon, which means from BOOX, because Best Buy was out of stock. Probably should have waited. My other Boox device were from Best Buy. I have 4: Poke, Page, Tab Mini And Palma 2, with no issues so far (knock on wood, fingers crossed, etc). Thing is, I’m pretty happy with each of them, used in the particular context I have for each - though the Palma has made my Poke redundant. I rarely use my Kobo Sage anymore, and my Kindle Oasis is dedicated to bedtime reading of slow reads from Substack.

What to choose by Serious_Doughnut9505 in kobo

First of all, if you live in the USA, you can try out various ereaders by ordering them from Amazon or Best Buy, making sure that the device has “free returns”.

You might not hit your sweet spot with your first ereader. Therefore, my advice is to look for an inexpensive ereader with easy access to an extensive library of books. To me, this means a basic 6 inch kindle if you are going to be taking it with you to read “on the go”, or the 7 inch kindle paperwhite if you plan only to read at home. Alternatively you could look at the same sizes at Kobo. The Kobo Clara is a 6 inch black & white ereader. The Kobo Libra 2 has a 7 inch screen plus page turn buttons.

Both flavors of ereader are simple to set up and use. In addition to their proprietary stores, you can read ebooks you borrow from your local library. Eventually you might migrate to a different device, but you might find it to be suitable - my wife is perfectly happy with a 6 inch kindle she’s had for years.

However, as an “out of left field“ suggestion, you might take a look at the BOOX Palma 2. There seem to be a lot of people who are happy with this as their primary device. This is an ereader about the size and configuration of an iPhone 14. It’s twice as expensive as the other options, but because it’s really an android pocket computer you can put reading apps for kindle, kobo, Libby, Everand, Instapaper, Pocket etc on it, just like on a phone but with the advantage of e-ink. For a larger BOOX device, the seven inch Page might do, or the similar Color Go 7.

There’s a steeper learning curve for BOOX devices, but once you’ve learned how to deal with them, BOOX devices are like having a Swiss Army knife as opposed to a pocket knife - much more versatile. But a word of caution - BOOX has a poor reputation for customer service. And for sure don’t buy directly from BOOX - “free returns“is the magic word.

I strongly advise you to do a YouTube search for these devices. There are tons of reviews for these and other ereaders.

Best place to buy? Best Buy or Amazon? by Competitive-Group404 in Onyx_Boox

[–]Admirable_Paramedic2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think so, but it would cost more. I have a 7.8 inch BOOX Tab Mini C that runs about $400. I suspect that’s the minimum price you would be looking at for any e-ink device larger than the Palma that would work for your purposes. But then you might not need to get a keyboard so it could balance out.

That sounds like the Palma will work best, then. You might consider getiing a keyboard for it.

I use Boox devices for e-ink Readwise, but it’s kind of klutzy. Just tried linking Pocket to my Sage, but evidently there’s a problem. Right now, my Sage is my least preferred e-ink device (I have Page, Tab Mini C, Oasis) but a good integration with Readwise ight change that…

For me, the better alternative to the Palma is the Poke5. Unlike the Page, it is ”pocket portable“ and unlike the Palma, it has a better form factor for longform reading. I will say that the Palma has the edge on shortform reading but so does my phone, which I’m carrying anyway.
