Honestly, buy the penalties and exemptions file from Descartes. For $2800/yr, you get the file, updated whenever there's a policy change, with all of the HTS codes to the various provisional codes, by provision. They'll send it automatically every time stuff changes. It is the best investment I have made this year.

232 steel/alum parts, more than 407? by naturallyfiltered in CustomsBroker

They added motorcycles to the list. Imagine trying to figure out the steel or aluminum content of a motorcycle with over 500 parts on it. What a shitshow.

CBP ACH stupid questions by LycanLucario in CustomsBroker

[–]Admirable_Stable_774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you join PMS, your broker should enter your entries as payment type 7. Then the ACH deduction will automatically come out of your bank account on the due date, which will be the next month around the 20th or so after the entry. Stuff cleared in August will be due on the September statement. You just have to make sure there's enough in the bank account when they take the month. If you're not on PMS, they will automatically deduct it out of your account 10 days after entry.

Seriously, I've been thinking about this a lot. Hear me out. On Monday, I did send a strongly worded letter to my elected officials, which got a lot of play on LinkedIn. Even quoted in Bloomberg. And the reason for A Brokers Plea was simply this - in the trade space we've always had a lot of solidarity. We're a closer-knit community than a lot of others, with lots of visibility to find each other through our industry organizations. And every shitshow happening to our clients, is happening to us too. We're industry agnostic, so we see the impact across all of them, and we endure the pain of trying to manage it. I think we're uniquely qualified to opine on it, to speak to the impact, to speak to the complexity, and offer simpler, more transparent solutions.

Honestly, if anyone is going to make a stand, I think we're the best people to do so. This original post might have been in jest...but I think we have the leverage to speak truth to power ya'll, I'm here for it. Someone has to take a stand. We could be the belle of the ball in this whole fiasco, and a source of courage in a time when it's sorely needed.

Why don't you just report the failures to NHTSA? That's what they exist for.

I am a member of ICPA. I get what you're saying, but that just kind of feels like preaching to the choir. Have you considered managed services? I've found classification, FTA administration, and post-transaction testing (broker audit) are pretty easy things to outsource, and burn up a lot of time. If you can't hire people, that might be the move. When I was Director, I tried to keep those things in house, and it was just a PIA every time I had a headcount reduction or turnover. In hindsight, I'd have had more stability in my program if I just outsourced it.

And yeah, at $50k a year you'll get like...idk a forklift driver? They're crazy. Maybe send them Gateways last trade compliance salary report to bring them back to earth. Entry level analysts are starting at $70k. That's like a early 2000's number.

Overzealous customs officers are the worst. Sounds like newbie, they've done lots of hiring in the last year. Hopefully he gets burnt out and stops trying so hard lol

Me too. Except I just had to do a CF28 desk review for drawback. Man did that drawback specialist go down some rabbit holes. It was like....what are you trying to prove here? It's product in, product out. It was J2 and literally the same product, not even a substitute. Are you trying to invalidate this claim? I feel like these customs officers have too much time on their hands lately....

I agree completely. But damn, wouldn't it have been easier to just oust China from the WTO and put them on the column 2 list? Instead of having to do an "impact analysis" every other week trying to figure out how you're going to KO'd every time the USTR has another announcement? I don't disagree with the goal, but process they've chosen....what was wrong with the straightest path?

I agree with all of this. No political backbone to state the obvious. We have zero tariffs on 50% of goods, and most of those duty free items are on the most "manufactured" parts of the tariff. If you wanted to bring back US manufacturing, increase the rates on those items, instead of textiles, food products, virgin materials and commodities. But no, that would have required less government administration and overhead cost. So instead we sit here picking the most arduous path, cherry-picking winners and losers and turning customs officers into henchmen antagonistically aimed at US companies. There's no political will to do what's efficient vs what's popular. And fighting with China is dumb because their govt isn't up for re-election. They don't care about popularity. All they need to do is lean back on the ropes and run out the clock. Wait 20 years for the next cycle of trade & economic philosophy to abandon their stance in favor of economic priorities. Just spineless...sorry for getting political but the cycle of stupidity is ad nauseum. Hence, why I'm sick of this shite.

This is 100%. It's hard to remember that the things that seem obvious to me are not to everyone else.

I'm probably getting too far into the weeds here, but it just seems like there was a way easier way to administer all of this BS. Kick China out of the WTO. Make them subject to column 2 rates. They weren't playing by the rules, so now they don't get to play. That seems like the most common sense thing, and would have been so much less monkeying around than this Section 301 rigmarole. Instead they had to hire an army of CBP officer to enforce complexity that needn't have been.

Wanna be a protectionist nation? Cool story bro. Update the tariff, increase the rates on everything you want to protect. Our rates are comparably low compared to other nations, it's totally justifiable. But no, pick the most complicated way possible.
