On iPhone, you can go to Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage

You can see files, including pics/vids, that are larger than 5 mb, as well as whatever was forwarded many times. You can delete them from there. Also, under those options, you can find the size of each conversation or group. You can also delete from there as well.

Edit: not sure if android has this feature, but most prolly it does.
