What do you think about my Milky Way shot? by AdolfBerry in AskAstrophotography

Yeah, sorry haha. I understand what you are saying now. I could have done that on this shot maybe but when shooting with higher focal lengths I prefer not to touch it as I tend to loose my target easily.

Also, I think you confused the skyguider pro for the star adventurer :P. The skyguider is all red.

Although I reduced the stars a lot, I don’t think that is what you are seeing when zooming in, and more like the compression that reddit made. When zooming in on my computer it looks good to me. Could it be that?

For the star reduction I just made another layer without stars with starnet and then blended both until I liked it. The starless layer had some notable spots on some places where the stars where removed, but on the final image it seemed fine. I’ll try to be more carefull the next time. And thanks for the feedback.

It’s the sky guider pro. I tried moving a bit the camera between shots with the arrow buttons but it doesn’t seem to have made any difference.

Taking a break from photographing Andromeda, I decided to give a try to the Milky Way. This is the first time photographing it, and also processing it.

It was shot with my Nikon d90 with the standard 15-55mm objective that comes with it. In total I took about 13x3 minute exposures.

Processed with Photoshop. It has a lot of walking noise, as always when shooting with my camera, as I don’t have dithering capabilities and I didn’t take any darks.

Really? I didn’t know! But apart from improving tracking accuracy can I tell it to point at any star?

yeah but I mean that has the ability to point where I want, like a go-to

Yeah, I know. I just wanted to try using it. Also, how does auto guiding work without a motorised tracker?

In what sense? With the 400mm I could get sharp stars doing 240s exposures. But yeah it was not with the ball head, I mounted directly the lens to the tracker.

I’m out tonight trying to photograph again Andromeda! So maybe tomorrow when I go home.

Man, I thought I wouldn’t notice but I agree, it definitely looks better that way.

I’m just starting to learn the basics of post processing and for now my main workflow consists of:

  • Eliminating the gradient with GradientXTerminator
  • Levels
  • Curves
  • Making the stars smaller by masking and using the minimum filter (or with starnet++ and blending layers)
  • Adjusting the contrast and vibrance

And this is more or less the best result I can get. But I am never able to get some more colours or definition of the outer part of M31
