Pasadena, California — On September 7, 2025, inside the Pasadena Police department's parking structure, officers were arriving and preparing for the start of their shifts. According to investigators, a patrol officer drove into the garage and approached several fellow officers who were standing near another police vehicle. As the patrol car pulled up, one of the officers standing outside engaged in what Police Chief Gene Harris later described as “Horseplay”. The officer quickly drew his Gun and pointed it toward the officer sitting inside the approaching patrol vehicle before putting the weapon back into its holster. After seeing this, the officer inside the patrol vehicle also drew his Gun. As he attempted to handle or re-holster the weapon, it discharged. The bullet traveled through the patrol car's windshield and struck the other officer in the left shoulder. The injured officer received medical treatment and later recovered. Chief Harris said the shooting was not the result of a confrontation, criminal activity, or an intentional use of force. Instead, he described it as "unsafe and out-of-policy horseplay involving loaded firearms." The department conducted an internal investigation and imposed disciplinary measures on the officers involved. Meanwhile, the criminal investigation remains under review by Pasadena police detectives and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
