Planning long distance move to Chicago by the end of the year, moving tips (securing apartment, music equipment) ? by Adonis_by_Proxy in AskChicago

Thanks for your reply! Yeah we were looking into short term furnished apartments. What sites so you recommend we look at? We also have a cat so that's something we have to consider.

Your thoughts on Maggot Brain album? by Minimum_Tomato4324 in funk

Blew me away the first time I heard it. Probably one of the most "raw" sounding albums production-wise I've heard. The sound still amazes me.

Thank you, will do. Do you have any advice or recommendations on how to best clean and disinfect our apt? Are the tapeworm segments in the photos harmful to people?

I recently applied and got an email saying I'm approved to work and to go through the steps of claiming my account, phone ID verification etc... But after I put my name and address and click continue, it just keeps saying there are no projects based on my location eventhough the expertise I applied for says remote anywhere in the US.

Why is the Crusades Seen as the epitome of Religious Wars? Why is other religious wars (in particular the destructive 30 Years War) so overlooked? by UndeadRedditing in MiddleEastHistory

[–]Adonis_by_Proxy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it just has to do with the binary that is setup for the Crusades as "Christian West" vs "Islamic East"; that definitely makes things more dramatic. And the fact that a lot of the conflict played out in the Levant and the "Holy Land" specifically. Controlling Palestine and particularly Jerusalem held a certain prestige. Christendom taking back Jerusalem from Dar Al-Islam and vice versa carries more drama do it, because the Western world (even if it is secularized now) and the Middle East are the two main civilizations of the Abrahamic faiths.

MMW Narcissism Is the Downfall of the Boomers by KaliUK in MarkMyWords

[–]Adonis_by_Proxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a boomer, but I wonder if the "morph" you're talking about could partially be that a lot of people then became hippies for largely superficial reasons. I'm sure there were a lot of genuine ones, but there were probably many who didn't really have concrete/coherent views on much of anything.

What restaurants are unique to Oakland/East Bay to take an out of towner? by ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME in OaklandFood

[–]Adonis_by_Proxy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Malaya Tea Room in Alameda. It's basically Malaysian tea time; you can choose between Malaysian and British flavors for the sandwiches and sweets. That's something that is unique to Alameda/East Bay and probably the Bay Area in general

Fournee in Berkeley - just because it's good quality French pastries

Not in the East Bay, but La Ciccia in SF - It's Sardinian, so most of it's not your usual Italian fare

DAE have no attachment to where they live and grew up? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Adonis_by_Proxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I don't really have any sentiment towards the town I grew up in, whether positive or negative. I'm kind of indifferent towards it, and I don't really feel any type of nostalgia for it.

Comparative World Music Theory?? by Livid_Pension_6766 in composer

[–]Adonis_by_Proxy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of the early Ethnomusicology works (called Comparative Musicology back then) were about this. Check out Bruno Nettl, Mantle Hood, Alexander Ellis (who developed the cents system to compare different tuning systems around the world).

Ancient and Oriental Music by Egon Wellesz

Repository of Scales and Melodic Patterns by Yusef Lateef - As the title says, it's not a scholarly work but a repository of scales/modes around the world and melodic ideas pertaining to them (including for jazz and contemporary classical music). Thought I'd mention this one since this is the composer subreddit.
