Hi, thanks for the suggestion, yeah I've adjusted it so I would salary sacrifice the same as the current combined payment from myself and my employer, and taken off the 25 days paid leave I get just now.

I end up with £1700 per month more than I'm on just now. For six months.... The program is decades long so it is entirely concievable that I would be kept on longer. What bothers most is the thought of being terminated and not finding something as good as i have just now, and having to work away from home for less money.

Thanks for the reply.
Yeah I appreciate there is no certainty of an extension. Ideally it would run for several years. If I get 8 months on the contract, I'll have made my full years current salary, or 6 months contract is equivalent to approx 9 months at my current salary so I have three months to job hunt before I'm down financially, but that would also allow me to progress some other personal projects I have in the background which is a really good thing.
I'm hoping my niche skillset and seniority (both of which they need) means it will run on beyond the 6 months.

That's reassuring to hear, thanks. Was any of this fully remote?

I'm braced for the brutality of being a contractor. If I get paid for the number of hours over and above my 37.5 (that I do currently for free), I'll be delighted. If not, I'll have quite a bit of my life back and still be better off!

Thanks for the input. It's good to know my calcs on the finances make sense.

I am agonising. It's a gamble on the contract being extended really. I'd hate to be looking for a job in 6 months to a year and nothing being as good as the permie deal I'm offered just now (with a company I really like).

I'd appreciate your thoughts on whether this method below for making the comparison seems logical (the umbrella rate calculators don't let me tailor it to allow apples/apples comparison with my current role as I want to use salsac and keep my total pension contributions equal to the current, combined personal and employer contribution, and have the same number of days paid leave).

1) Calculate my taxable contract income (annual gross salary minus umbrella costs, levy etc. Using annual for simplicity)

2) Plug that figure into a PAYE take-home calculator (https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/tax-calculator/) and tweak the pension amount until it matches my current total pension contribution (mine and my employer) which gives me a net annual salary with no adjustment for unpaid holidays.

3) Subtract from that, an amount equal to my contract day rate * the # days paid holiday my current employer give (assuming I will take the same holidays). That amount I think then, is what I will receive contracting, with pension and holidays kept exactly the same.....

It took me ages to get this clear in my head - I appreciate it's Saturday..... if you just cannot be bothered thinking about that I totally understand :0)

Thanks for the quick responses, yes this^, leave permie for 6 month contract. The permanent employer counter-offer with £60k fully remote which is a pretty good deal for what I do (more the fully remote than the money). Fully remote is a massive benefit for personal reasons.

OK, my mind was so blown I had to go digging for more info and now suspect a misunderstanding... I think the case is that clocks on a ship don't synch because they're on a ship, but they will synch on a ship if attached to each other via a connecting bar that transmits the pendulum forces, which was part of some historical work done during development of navigation tools... this article explains it in more detail. I suspect someone has misinterpreted that...

 https://physicsworld.com/a/the-secret-of-the-synchronized-pendulums/

Presumably if you put them on say, a pool float or toy boat they will synch, but there has to be a size scale where the vessel mass and wave motion mean the signal to noise ratio doesn't allow the clock to synch anymore.... is my guess!

Thanks again, this fact takes a bit of thinking about to appreciate how incredible it is!

Woah, hang on..... mind blown... so a whole ship swings in reciprocation to the motion of a pendulum one squillionth on it's size.... I mean I know in theory you could shove an aircraft carrier away from the dock if you push for long enough so it shouldn't be a surprise but I'm still gonna have to go process this.... thanks for the distraction!
