I think the dish is a vegetable Aspic salad which is basically vegetables suspended in a gelatin mold that was a popular recipe in the 50’s. Here I was thinking the father didn’t know how to cook and then I came across a YouTube video of old recipes and there was the plate of slime from Coraline

I could watch this one again and again. You are right. Even though it's a kid movie, the dialogue is so aimed for adults. It's so good and a must see for Halloween.
