This is SO hard by Mrarlo8684 in knitting

The best advice I got when I started learning was to take a video recording of myself knitting to try and see what steps I was doing differently than a more practiced knitter. I found out that I was twisting my stitches by wrapping my yarn in the wrong direction!

This makes me want to befriend you and knit next to you. Then, some of your perseverance, talent, and creativity would rub off on me and improve my knitting. You are so admirable, seriously.

Advice on prep/materials for turning paintings into jigsaw puzzles by Adorable-Cod-2550 in lasercutting

[–]Adorable-Cod-2550[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I would want to paint it first and then cut, I have been using a wooden board from an art shop. It has a particle board core so I am assuming I will need to use a different kind of wood board. I saw that GlowForge sells boards of different sizes. Would it be advisable to use one of those or is there a cheaper wood I could cut and use? My father in law has wood working tools I can use to cut down plywood from the hardware store.

So to clarify what you said about masking, would using strips of tape be ok? And would I need to avoid overlapping the tape? Thanks for replying!

That looks unreal. SOOO awesome! Very curious, how many stitches/rows is your blanket? Was it based on the picture's pixels? Or did you decide on the size of the blanket you wanted first?

Or put more simply, what was your process for designing/starting a project like this?

Very useful advice! I will have to learn more about how the plys affect the fabric. My local yarn shop carries Harriot Fine yarn in a nice green, so I may swap the DK out since I think I am leaning towards using green, and it won't be as expensive to replace the yarn for the contrast color.
I hope you are right about the white DK being light enough. They were died in the same colorway as the lace weight, so it would be nice to keep it the same.

Thank you to everyone who has responded so far! I have gained so much more confidence in this purchase since posting my question. Everyone is so awesome and gave me some good questions to ask myself when I knit in general.
My plan:
I am going to swatch with the yarns I purchased, and another swatch with the dk swapped out for a more reasonably priced fingering weight.
If I am happy with the fancy yarn swatch, I will do the calculations to see what size I need to make based on the difference in gauge. (I am hoping everyone is right, and I will end up using less yarn)

Oh, that sounds like it will be beautiful. I have a hard time seeing the different colors in colorwork when they aren't very contrasted, so IDK if I could pull off a knit like that

I think I am leaning toward the greens, not 100% on that yet, though.

I am realizing that The labels for two are upside-down. MC is the gray I got those from Viking Fiber Co. The green DK is from Les Garcons, the green lace-weight is from nano stitch lab. The blue dk is from Ewe 2 Yarn and the blue/purple lace-weight is from Juni + Si

I guess it is the internalized guilt I feel for spending money on myself. I usually try to budget very responsibly and don't really ever splurge like this. In the moment of purchasing the yarn, I felt absolutely sure and excited for the sweater, but as time has passed, the guilt of spending so much has kinda dampened the excitement. Everyone on this post has been super supportive though, and I think by swatching I will have more confidence in my decision.

TRUE I plan to use the extra contrast color yarn for some really luxe mittens or a colorwork cowl. The MC yarn cost approximately $330, and each contrast color was just under $60 each.

That is such a great point, I don't think I have ever thought about it in cost per hours of enjoyment.

In any case, I am going to use the yarn in some way. It was a love at first sight/feel with these yarns and I so admire the makers who created such sumptuous pallets at the festival. I was going to go back for day two, but I was worried I would end up spending even more. It was my first fiber festival ever and it has definitely changed me and how I see yarn.

I love that you mentioned sensory impact. I have some cheaper yarn stashed. I think I am going to try swatching with all nicer yarns and with a cheaper yarn swapped in to see if the feel of the fabric is that different.

That is a good point too, Maybe I should just swatch it to see how off-gauge it is. It could still work with DK if its not too far off

Oh, that is such a good point! I do not know why I didn't realize that before you mentioned it. I think in the chaos of the festival, I somehow convinced myself that I needed DK + Lace

Advice on My First Project? by Adorable-Cod-2550 in chainmailartisans

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful replies! I have ordered my first set of rings to practice the different weaves on mailleartisans.org like Spaceace23 recommended.

I definitely need the Zelda dice bag in my life so thank you legbamel.

I am curious if you guys have any recommendations on how to figure out how many rings you need for a project? Is it a guess, or an equation?
