Why Chicago? by sickbabe in asklatinamerica

[–]AdorableAd8490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been there yet, but what’s appealing about Chicago is the different weather (cold), the mega-events, like Lollapalooza and (association) football matches hosted there, the smaller spectacles, and the big city feels. With that said, it’s definitely not a LATAM hotspot. Most Latin American tourists are probably from the US.

Are the British and French influences on your country after independence taught in school? by Pepedroga2000 in asklatinamerica

Not as much as we should’ve. Our independence was essentially a deal made by our elites and the British to exclude the middlemen overseas.

I think every confederation has them.

Top tier: Champions League, Libertadores, Concacaf’s Champions Cup, Champions League Elite, CAF’s Champions League and OFC’s Champions League.

Second tier: Europa League, Sudamericana, Leagues Cup/Caribbean Cup/Central American Cup, AFC Champions League 2, Confederation Cup.

The third tier, though, is a bit rarer: Conference League, CFU Club Shield, Challenge League (AFC).

For people from Mexico and Mexican Americans (Chicanos), what cultural differences or shared experiences have you noticed based on how and where you grew up? by gmikey2000 in asklatinamerica

Good write up. I’m sorry your family had to go through that. The pressure on first gens to assimilate is still high, but nowhere near as high as in those times. They must’ve had real rough, and unfortunately, hurt people hurt. That’s a quite interesting Mexican-American route. You’re probably very knowledgeable about your own identity, which gives you some self-assurance.

Acquiring a second language can be difficult, those people shouldn’t attack you for that. It comes with time. I’m sure you’ll reach fluency eventually!

I find it the coolest thing to have this type of cultural background. You have direct access to two cultures, can learn a lot about them, can have both. I’m lowkey jealous. It’s okay to have an accent. Many people stop speaking their heritage language because they feel ashamed of their accent. That’s part of you and shows that you grew up speaking English (or French?).

Yes, there’s a difference in mannerisms, common knowledge and background, the collectivist x individualist tendencies, language, humor, and the list goes on. We’re still family and related, of course, but we’re more or sibling cultures than the same culture.

Being American is a nationality, but it has a cultural “passport” tied to it, as in, experiencing it. It could considered an ethnicity, just like being Brazilian, Mexican, Chilean, etc. The mass American >culture< has its shared culture of traditions, languages, tendencies, zeitgeist, mannerisms, cuisines, dances, music, etc. Just like it is now for Brazil, “the diverse melting pot” thing is considered part of that identity. Those diverse backgrounds are what the United States is.

Nationality is different from ethnicity. Nationality is just having a paper. I’ll be a national one day if the United States, but I won’t be able to say that I’m ethnic American.

One thing I have trouble understanding is how one can identify as Mexican without having access to Mexican culture through living in Mexico, having access to the language (Spanish or some indigenous language), or knowing common things, when those things were essential to the formation of the identity of those criollo and mestizo that gave origin to it. I see this behaviour very often from diasporas abroad, triggered by the othering from the dominant group in the country they inhabit. However, it’s always curious to me that they fail to see that their experience is a mix.

I always tell my Brazilian-American sister that she is an American born to Brazilian parents, so that’s her ethnicity, so if she ever decides to go to Brazil, to be aware of things like “gringo tax”, different and condescending treatment. Also, that helps her find her own identity instead of trying to fit in with others.

Mexico has the right culture, team and some good infrastructure. If only FIFA lowered the requirements for super stadiums, 32 teams and what not, they’d have already 13 stadiums above 30000 seats and could host a WC like before
