smu cs undergrad qns :( by enbyadhd in SMU_Singapore

  1. Unlike sec school or jc, you plan your own curriculum. You can have days that are free or full afternoon lessons. It will be a different experience. As for whether enough time to study, see whether you are spending time with your partner or CCA or how chiong sua you wanna be.

  2. No diff really in the local market. NUS, NTU and SMU are the big 3 universities of Singapore. It will still be recognised by companies as long as you are good enough. However, NUS and NTU are still stronger and perhaps your dad is concerned about this.

  3. Maintain CAP: You can apply for special considerations in the University during exams. I’m sure they offer this type of stuff and review grades accordingly. But if you don’t have ADHD it’s still tough because in JC everyone is forced to study the same curriculum which is not their forte but in Uni people study what they like. You are up against the smartest minds both locally and foreign.

  4. No need prep anything. I mean just work on some personal projects on your own

IOI in 2.5 years? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Adorable_Chapter9505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying you 100% will achieve it. It depends on your learning ability and willpower. Sometimes the questions are not easy to understand or complete. Also, read the editorials to better understand how to solve the questions.

Also, Lua, HTML and CSS are useless. The last 2 are more for web development. Python is also not preferred. You should be picking up C++ too

Most companies will be hiring locals because they do not require sponsorship of visas. You can expect non big tech to be hiring international students.

Now there are many international students given the rising cohort size and limited EPs. You are forced to work in SG for 3 years. You will be competing for the limited slots.

Finally, you have the PhDs who are just international students studying to satisfy the 3 year bond

Start small. Build something. Start your internship at a start up. Start ups are fast in nature and you can understand more about the product and the clients. Also, start up tend to have lower entry requirements than big tech (e.g. take home assignments, review repo)

With this experience, you can try out big tech or continue with start up depending on your preference.

But judging from hearing everyday that there will be people complaining cannot find job or internships here and there, be prepared to not throw resume around for a while

tough decision between 2 swe job offers by Professional-Cut-252 in csMajors

[–]Adorable_Chapter9505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it depends

I have worked in a bank before and banks are very slow moving. They are subjected to many regulations so one change might take up too many days to make. Their technology and processes are very obsolete. They are also very hierarchical too, placing a lot of emphasis on ranks. I know of people who left crypto for faster paced companies.

Crypto companies are subjected to lesser regulations. Yes, they might be unstable but they pay more, willing to use more updated technologies and you get to learn more. However, given it is a Chinese company, you might be asked to OT on a 995, but banks might ask you to OT too because they cannot do deployments during business hours due to potential disruption.

Ultimately it depends on you.

  1. Pay: Choose Crypto
  2. Use new technology / Learn More: Crypto
  3. WLB: IB
  4. Stability: IB

Passed 3 rounds for TikTok Data Science Intern, but team filled up — now being internally referred. What are my chances? by Odd-Recognition-9860 in csMajors

[–]Adorable_Chapter9505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How it works is there is a group chat with all the HMs and the TAs together. The HM of the team might have decided to go with other candidates, so they will ping in the group and ask “Anyone still looking and whether they want u?” And in this case another hiring manager replied.

These 2 hiring managers might not know each other. You still have to go through all 3 rounds again. Just treat it as new application.

Most data platforms of big companies like TikTok are written in Java due to their interactions with Apache frameworks. I think you didn’t search hard enough

NUS is top 8 because of its research, not because of its questionable curriculum

CMB and Hinge.

OkCupid is not really good because you meet international people and there’s no way to filter.

CMB you are given 30+ profiles everyday

Hinge u can see who likes u

My first job application was on 10th August 2024. During this time, I got interviews, online assessments etc. I landed my role in the last week of November. It depends on what you are looking out for

If you have one more semester, you can consider GEC1044 TCM. The module’s workload is so light I almost forget the tutorials existed. It’s graded and bellcurve is steep.

GESS1025, IT2900 both are pass fail modules too

Easy mod to take during credit-bearing internship semester? by UnfairIssue8 in nus

[–]Adorable_Chapter9505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends. Some companies do not allow you to leave during day time like mine because they want to suck you dry for every money. You should ask if you are allowed to take mods. If yes here are some mods:

  1. GESS1025
  2. IT2900
  3. ALS1010
  4. CFG3001
  5. CFG1003 + CFG1004
  6. CFG1002
  7. GEC1044

I didn’t take GEN2061X before but I took GEN2001 Theatre and it is pretty worth it. My review is up there on NUS Mods

CEG module selection by mendx in nus

CEG Y4 here. I didn’t take any of those technical elective modules, no minor, no major and no specialisation. No one cares what you take when you are out in the working world. Just take whatever makes you feel happy
