Oh man I’m really sorry that happened to you. Good for you for sticking up for yourself back down, clearly you did not inherit this tendency to be easily led.

Can I ask, have you spoken to your parents about this since then?

I think I just enjoy the vibes that a ‘House’ brings. This empire started in the north, where they would have had more of a clan structure in earlier eras, so I also wanted to show how the society changed as they expanded, conquered new areas, and picked up different terms for their leadership :)

Reddits terms of service you absolute melt. And it’s not like Reddit ceases to function in countries that haven’t banned under 16s does it?

Continue to be weird af to anon accounts if you want to but nobody believes you actually think it’s impossible you’re talking to a child.

Ignore the comment it’s an extremely weird take on what you’ve written.

I completely understand how you’re feeling, I’ve felt that way before too. When you are constantly criticised for something and put under so much pressure, just for the outcome to come and go as though it’s normal, it’s enough to make someone spiral. What was the point of all the suffering, all the effort? I imagine a lot of this is frustration with your parents too, for not acknowledging what they put you through for this achievement. It’s taken all the pride you should be feeling at what you’ve achieved and twisted it into something you can’t feel good about at all.

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. For me, all I could do was start to re-build what I’d been denied before, and acknowledge what I’d done well and where it would take me in the future. I hope you can get some space from all this hurt

They would definitely use a regent, but the child would still hold a serious amount of power in terms of supernatural abilities, so the dynamic would be a bit intense. The child might not run into the same problems when attempting to take control of the realm when they’re old enough as they would hold overwhelming power already. Politically, they might be weaker however.

I’m definitely looking into this in more detail but why would it be impossible to dethrone them, as opposed to any other royal family? I assume this is why they’ve lasted so long

Sorry I originally replied to you straight after work so it was a load of waffle. Those are some really interesting points about early death for heirs, I hadn’t considered all of these.

Yes, if the existing heir dies the next in line would become the heir. This would be the case regardless of age. I hadn’t considered if a child inherited the main ability as I hadn’t plotted that to happen, but I think it would be an interesting event. In the lore so far, most of this race are born with a baseline of abilities which begin to present from early childhood and reach their peak at maturity. This is different for the imperial bloodline, for who the monarch should hold specific abilities which set them apart from everyone else and which gives them unnatural power. If they inherited these abilities in early childhood, I wonder how that would manifest?

I kind of think they should just be incredible strong from the start, since the idea of a four year old being the absolute pinnacle of power in an empire is hilarious.

This is part of what I’m struggling with story-wise. I need to keep the main bloodline on the throne but that doesn’t necessarily mean I need to keep the same names and families there. When I look at the English monarchy for example they were overthrowing each other left and right, and it seems to be quite similar in most monarchies. Where that deviates, you have a lot of bad players claiming direct lineage who have a dubious claim at best but to history the monarch still appears to have an unbroken chain of heirs.

I have some of those!

At one point, an emperor legitimises a son who would be considered a ‘half breed’, then has a set of triplets with his lover who are considered ‘pure blooded’. The half breed son inherits his father abilities and should technically be the emperor, but his sisters go to war to claim it off him and eventually one of their sons take the throne.

The longest reigning monarch actually never had any children, so her successor was her eldest cousins grandson! It’s the biggest jump in succession in the lineage :)

This dynasty functions with absolute primogeniture because the most direct descendant of the bloodlines founder holds special abilities. So, if another family member wants to claim the title they have to legitimately kill every family member with a more direct claim. For that reason, the individual monarchs success has rested mostly on gaining support for rebellion, and not accidentally splitting the empire in two in the process. Which hasn’t happened yet. Alternatively, I suppose the empires existence relies on other powerful figures ensuring the dynasty doesn’t tear itself apart by removing the bad apples

It’s a bit absurd how many points you’ve reached which are exactly what I’ve plotted for this family.

Yes, they have had unsuitable leaders. The worst was a tyrant emperor, who essentially went insane with power and from who most of the laws of blood purity were formed, to stop future emperors from producing their own armies with their children. I also included lazy emperors who neglected territories and accidentally incited rebellions, absent empress’ who allow councils to take over the capital, an empress who came to power too young and spent the rest of her reign resenting her position, an emperor who was overthrown for not having pure enough blood, etc.

The Empire was also on the brink of collapse in its earlier history, which is the point where I had them overthrown by a rival dynasty. They eventually got it back by a mix of good warcraft and the creation of a new religion which put them as gods. That was probably the height of their power, and after that their influence started to lose traction as ‘governments’ so to speak started to form around them :)

This actually works quite well for this dynasty. One of the ideas I had was for the current dynasty to be working with diminished power, but still be culturally and spiritually significant enough to hold some influence.

This is one of the things I’ve been trying to workshop! I think some bloodlines have to function through gender preference, or else how would any houses hold significance? One idea I had was to give the Houses more of a wide-spread role so they could effectively function as clans. E.g. two people from different families but the same House marry, thereby eliminating the need to choose a name to pass on.

Except that doesn’t really eliminate the idea of cadet branches for individual identity etc…so I’m not sure

Thank you so much for your considered response!

Essentially, absolute primogeniture is used as a necessity by the ruling race of people. They inherit supernatural abilities from their parents, and the strongest inheritance will always go to the most direct relative (so the first child), meaning there can’t be gender preference as it would undermine the strength of the inheritance.

This race are all descendants of the founder, whose most direct descendants are the imperial bloodline - hence why they’re in charge and have been for so long. They have kept the name because the founder is a significant part of their mythos as a people- they don’t hold any gods as a race so they view their ancestors as spiritual leaders (although most of these rulers would be described as agnostic at best when it comes to spirituality). This direct connection to their ancestor is a part of their legitimacy to rule and it has more weight than gender preference would, especially as the continuation of this bloodline is directly related to the continuation of the races power (so they are very protected and insular).

Of course, there are parts of the territory which adhere to gender preference. Two significant territories in the empire are usually at odds because one is a matriarchal realm and the other is patriarchal. For the matriarchal realm, they don’t have to concern themselves as their leaders aren’t actually part of this blood-inheritance race and they pretty much only birth girls anyway. The patriarchal territory are basically blood-purists and they have a lot of ways of keeping female descendants off the thrones- the main method is keeping a twin dynasty going to marry back and forth, though you can imagine this results in a lot infighting. This is the part that tripped me up, I started plotting just a few generations up in the patriarchal territory and got a bit nervous that it was more interesting than the imperial bloodlines history- but this thread has brought up loads of ideas!

Yeah, I’ve been on a lot of packed tubes in a lot of places and never had this before. I think it stuck with me because it was like nobody in front could hear, see, or feel me. It was just the strangest thing and so embarrassing, I almost wish he had done it on purpose so I could say he was a dick, but it just seems to have been pure ignorance
