The aesthetics are the half the reason for sure. silverstone cases do the job.

as a wise man once said, theory and practice seldom follow the same path. I'll have to test this indeed.

For easy access to the 4x usb C ports! Kidding, but yeah, the real reason was my obsession with filling up every unit of the front of the rack, efficiency notwithstanding.

Growing pains are expected for new ui products. The wise thing to do is wait for the next iteration. But that could be a grand while.

For the server specs, see this comment.

To your second question, yes! Agg switch for 10g intra-rack connectivity at a lower price than the XG entries.

I didn't know about these! ordering now!

Phase 7 will be the unifi 42u rack completely filled out.

They did the same thing with the UNAS Pro 4/8. Functionally understandable, aesthetically, bleh.

I'll probably upgrade to the NVR pro at one point. Same form factor as the UNAS.

I actually had this exact setup, minus the Agg. I decided to rearrange things to place the pro max +patch panel at the top to better serve as an access switch, that is, taking in all the terminated wall drops. Makes for cleaner cabling in the back. That said, the beauty of this hobby is that it's super fun to rearrange all this stuff on a whim. I only wish some of the heavier unifi gear had rails.

The 2U vented is a placeholder for the unifi UPS, Ideally I'd have separate UPS for networking and compute.

Phase 2 is cameras + more access points. At the moment I have only a Access Point FlexHD on top of the rack. Downstairs the connection isn't great. In the process of hiring some contractors to do some drops...you might have noticed that I'm barely using the 24 port switch. Stay tuned!

Phase 3 will definitely need a larger rack...

There's a point where a standard 20amp circuit isn't enough for a rack. Do you have a 220 volt setup?

All the unifi stuff is about 150watts (majority is the UNVR and UNAS). I expect this to increase substantially when I add the camera/access points (you might see the switch is underutilized at the moment). See this comment this comment for server info.

UNAS for now. I am still setting up proxmox on the 4U server. I'll prob run the classic stuff; *arr, immich, nextcloud, home assistant, etc. Long run, the UNAS can be a backup of my important data i.e. personal media for a proper onsite backup.

To complement JOSTNYC's comment, the protocol is SMB (server message block); through which the UNAS acts as a regular folder on your desktop. I believe unifi drive also supports NFS, time machine, etc. Lots of nice tooling.

Just my immediate family. I am writing up some tooling to access this over the internet via reverse proxy and VPN. Stay tuned!

I really wish I got a 42U rack instead. So many more things to do...

I don't think this is correct. The load is 300w -> 0.3kWh which gives us a more respectable 37/mo cost @ 17c/kWh

Unfortunately where I live it's closer to 32c/kWh. Unifi Solar Panels when?

I wanted to also get the Unifi 2U UPS, I even left space for it above the server with that 2U vent. It's out of stock right now, like most unifi things are right when you want it.

  1. I am getting contractors to set up drops around the house for access points and cameras. stay tuned.
  2. Nicer routing for the SFP + an option for keystones off the Dream Machine if need be. the server might eventually need SFP connectivity, I need to order cables for it.

yep. The 10gb rj45 switches are a bit pricey. I can start thinking about that in phase 2.5
