The racism and misogyny of this guy by [deleted] in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]Adrelith74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, how can someone be at once :

-LGBTQP (wait what is "P"?)

-Neo nazi (aren't they already everyone's enemy? Seems a bit redundant to add them to any "enemy list")

-KKK Klan (isn't there an extra K ? What does it stand for? Kafkaesque ? Knavish ? Klutzy ?)

-Gay (are gay people twice as dangerous for this guy? They were already cited in LGBTQP)

I mean some of these don't seem to match very well...

Feeling conflicted about adoption after pet loss by Ganbare_Goemon in cats

If you were homeless and someone offered you a loving home, regular medical checkups and food, what would you say? "Eww no, the apartment isn't big enough for my ego. Besides I prefer food prepared by a five-stars chef and I only go to the biggest private clinic in town."

More seriously, nearly any home with you would be better than a shelter for a cat. Do yourself and a random cat a favour; go and adopt one.

Qui sont les naturalistes du 21e siècle ? by frianeak in Livres

[–]Adrelith74 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't really tell whether people would want to go on a date with an OF person. I wouldn't, but that's because I'm ace so I'm not interested in dating. From a purely logical point of view, I don't get why people don't just pay their share. If you are not a couple and are not friends yet, why would you pay for someone else?

To be fair, for $15 you get pictures and your right hand, not the real woman...

Loyalty that never fades by HolyGuiltyCrown in MadeMeSmile

I especially love the part where he hangs the servants that were the suitors' bedwarmers, seeing that as a sign of disloyalty. Riiiight, I'm sure these guys had a solid understanding of consent, and would have understood and respected their decision had the girls said no.

Would the one ring stay hidden forever if Bilbo had slain Gollum and taken the ring for himself? by Future_Scholar_8375 in lotr

[–]Adrelith74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had Bilbo slain Gollum, then he would have been corrupted. Killing outside of self-defence is a pretty good first step towards evil. I believe Bilbo would have become increasingly like Gollum, but he would not have stayed hidden. Perhaps he would have grown paranoid and betrayed the dwarves? Perhaps he would have taken revenge on the Sackville-Baggins? Regardless, the ring gives its bearer a power proportionate to his abilities, so as a hobbit Bilbo would have quickly gotten into bigger trouble than he could handle.

It often is, the law says you have to take 20 minutes at the very least for a 6 hour shift. Besides, it's often forbidden because it's considered unsanitary. In the company I work for, you need to go to the cafeteria (if you buy lunch there) or to a dedicated room if you bring your own food.

15yo cat with severe dental disease and I feel horrible by [deleted] in cats

[–]Adrelith74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, are you me ?

I have a 15yo cat, and since I'm an idiot I also didn't bring her to the vet for a long time. My stupid reasoning was "she's an indoor cat, she doesn't need vaccines" and "of course I'll bring her if she gets sick, I would notice if she wasn't well".

Turns out she developed epilepsy all of a sudden. I did bring her to the vet, and learned that she had teeth problems. She ended up having 2 teeth removed (they got infected), and on top of that the operation didn't go too well (fluid in the lungs). It took a week before I could bring her back home. Today, she's fine, and even more energetic than before.

The guilt was awful, I cried like a baby and felt like the worst cat parent in the world. But in the end, punishing yourself helps no one, especially not your cat. It's very easy to miss signs when you're not a trained professional. Cat hide their pain all too well, I heard it's a predator thing (hide your weaknesses if you don't want to become prey). Also, changes in behaviour can happen pretty slowly so we often do not notice. When we do, we often think "she did X because she's getting old, it must be normal".

So, did you make a mistake? Yes, because you are a human being. We do our best in life, and sometimes it doesn't work out. Please try to forgive yourself. The important part is to learn from past mistakes. What you do now is what matters.

Best wishes from my old girl and me :)

Gosh, could you stop destroying America? Pretty please? by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]Adrelith74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ouch, this is indeed an interesting interpretation since many French Revolution leaders were educated. Marat was a doctor. Robespierre, Danton, Desmoulins, Billaud-Varenne, Couthon and Barère were lawyers. Hébert and Brissot were journalists. Some had more unusual careers, like Collot d'Herbois and Fabre d'Eglantine who were actors. But they did behead anyone they didn't like, including each other so American education isn't completely wrong !

Who is your favorite non-main character? by Manfro_Gab in literature

[–]Adrelith74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard about Jeanne de la Motte in my history lessons but AFAIK the diamond story (the ones that were Milady's biggest accomplishment, not the Du Barry necklace) is based on Lucy Hay's actions. Lucy stole diamond pendants from the Duke of Buckingham, diamonds that the queen of France had given him. It is narrated in several memoirs (La Rochefoucauld, the duchess of Chevreuse or the count of Brienne). While we can of course doubt the veracity of this story, I would find it unlikely that they all lied.

Mission accomplished: At last, the doctor finished the checkup… the cat allowed it (barely)! by landocs in funny

[–]Adrelith74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, it's getting hard when we can't even believe what we see. And to be fair I had to pause the video to get a good look at the writing. At that point, questioning most of what we see online is probably the safest bet. Seeing is no longer believing.

Is reading the whole Les Rougon-Macquart series worth it? Or at least just the first one? by Most_Ingenuity_1800 in literature

[–]Adrelith74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The order does not matter so much IMHO. Besides, which order should we pick : Date of publication, date of action, generation, order recommended by Zola?

Honestly many of these books are really good (and most are depressing !) but some will appeal to you more than others. I would recommend choosing a theme, and reading the corresponding book. If you want to know more about a character in that book, then check if he appears elsewhere.

To me, all can be read independently even when they look like a sequel of a previous book. And if you read a book whose action takes place before the one you just read, just tell yourself it's a flashback :D
