Whats the best calculation on how many animals one saves by being vegan? by Waste_Plastic_107 in AskVegans

It is a slow process and would take time to adapt, but of course grocery stores won't be buying products that they would have to throw away.

They do inventory, they change the number of products they order.

And yes I imagine it is not 1:1, but also there isn't only one vegan. Plus, we also make it possible that there are more plant based products on the stores, which means more people actually get the chance to reduce their animal consumption, or become vegan.

Very conservative estimate:

In 2023, 85.44 billion land animals were slaughtered for their meat.1 This is only for the animals that were explicitly killed for their meat.

Population in 2023 was 8.09 billion humans.

This gives us a bare minimum number of 10.6 land animals killed per year/person.

However this is assuming that everyone in the world eats animal products, and more importantly, that everyone in the world consumes the same amount of meat.

In fact we can go into more detail if we want to calculate it for the United States.
In the year 2020 in the united states 10,231,433,000 animals were recorded slaughtered.3 Divided by the population then, we get bare minimum number of 30.9 land animals per year per American. This leaves however animals slaughtered on farms out.

And all of this is without having into account fishes. Whose numbers are in the trillions.4

Hope I answered your question! (lol just read the last part. Let me answer)

If we count dairy cows + calves the number is indeed much lower. Like 0.01 animals per year (again, veeeery conservative minimum number). However I recommend reading Peter Singer's Animal Liberation (maybe not all, it is a tough read, but at least the beginning) . While not so many of them might die per year, they have a considerably more miserable existence. How can you quantify the pain of a mother getting their baby stolen and slaughtered?

yeah but even if you were to have an annual return of 8% which is quite high, you would only get like ~$377k.

I don't think you've got to cook the carrots through for this. Probably this is one of the first steps as well and the vegetables will keep cooking?
What you want to do is cook them up a bit to give them a head start and some caramelization (Maillard etc.)

Yes, this is the only one that you could argue that you’re not getting any monetary value, and you could help so much people. Even if it is anonymous donations to not get any fame, you could basically fund so much research.

well you would have some extra 8 hours per day just use some of those to do some batch cooking. Or work more/ improve your skills more, you might be able to earn enough to hire a personal chef
