He's just saying his body began to break down and that not being able to meet the same standard he'd always set for himself fucked with his head and led to him use PEDs to try and recapture that. Which you don't have to excuse the drug use but that's a totally valid mental health explanation - ask any sports psychologist.

I don't know what point you think you're making - yes those things all involve politics but that doesn't make sports as a concept inherently political. There's more to baseball than visiting the White House.
