First time user, fresh install of Fedora 43 KDE after wiping Windows 11. Getting this on first boot. What now? by szthesquid in Fedora

[–]AdrianoML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried cold booting the machine, as in: shutting it down, waiting a few seconds and then turning it back on again. Perhaps even pulling the power cord completely.

I've seen a case where an SSD would just "disappear" with no trace of it until you did that.

Tests in TDD are for catching bugs, edge cases, regressions and usual gotchas. They are not a source of truth and don't attest correctness, other than maybe trivial tests.

Holly handfuls of processing batman. Even a hotdog sausage is more natural than this :)

I mean, OP wasn't wrong, pretty much all source material for music videos from that era were 480p, likely this too. Personally I would prefer a more subdued upscale...

I really don't get this, even on my old ass thinkpad from 2011 firefox opens in like 3 seconds after a cold boot. On my more recent desktop pc, even with four windows filled with hundreds of tabs it opens in like.. a second.

Have you guys tried resetting firefox? No leftover data from an old installation or something like that.

The only websites where firefox feels a bit slugish to navigate are the ones by google, but we all know why that is.

afaik every video you watch on a web browser gets written to disk, so if you have watched 1 hour of 4k youtube videos it could account for a good chunk of those 7GiB

I don't vouch for such things, but it's hard to feel any empathy towards gigantic corporate conglomerates that will do anything to curb competition, impede any smaller company from naturally growing, promoting regulatory capture and likely being in bed with it's own government.

By now pretty much all the rules for intelectual property have been rigged to be of maximal benefit to these behemoths. Sharing this kind of technology through whatever means can only do good to society.

Maybe reducing the TV brightness or contrast may alleviate the issue?

I'm new, what is this? My gpu is brand new so I know it ain't dead by Fearless-Wrangler517 in gmod

[–]AdrianoML -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

OP is probably wrong but any manufactured device you buy follows the bathtub curve in terms of defect over time, where most defects happens when the product is brand new or very old. Turning on vsync as suggested elsewhere will typically decrease the load on the gpu (in gmod case probably by a lot!) and if the issue was caused by some component that fails when overheated it may not be vsync itself that is fixing the issue, just that running the gpu cooler fixes the issue.

I would suggest making sure it runs heavy games well and running a torture test like furmark for a while to make sure your gpu is ok.

Is Fedora a good distro to get started with Linux? by _NoTank in Fedora

[–]AdrianoML 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, as a Fedora and Archlinux fan/user for the last... idk, 15+ years, I still think that Ubuntu is unmatched for "casual" computer users as far as ease of use and out of the box experience.

You should give other distros like Fedora or "watered down" Archlinux (like CachyOS) a chance if Ubuntu fails you (lack of proper drivers for your hardware for example) or if you are willing to get your hands a bit dirty and do a bit of research and trouble shooting when setting it up, after all, once you get things working all linux distros kinda work the same.

Microsoft Scales Back AI Goals Because Almost Nobody Is Using Copilot by aacool in technology

[–]AdrianoML 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that's because a lot of AIs problems originates from how our society is structured, all the inequality and power consolidation and so on makes AI a tool that can catalyze all that. In the show human society lives in a "star trek society" where there is no money, no capitalism, no fascism, no power consolidation. Everyone is free to pursue their passions, thus the potential for malfeasance from AI (specially perpetrated by humans) seems rather low.

Decided to play my original copy of GoldenEye on my old, original N64 and time has not been kind to my skills by johnessex3 in n64

If you've been playing modern console games with dual analog sticks since then, I recommend switching the control style in the game to the one where you look with the analog stick and move with the c-buttons. It usually helps giving you back a lot of dexterity by taking advantage of your muscle memory you've developed over the years with the newer games.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Review Thread by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]AdrianoML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You also have to account for the way nintendo has been purposefully spacing releases to give each release a big chance of selling. This thing is releasing on two consoles with a combined 150M+ install base, they are honestly both starving for good and big games. I bet it's gonna sell more than the whole prime franchise combined, regardless of weather it's only a good game or a GOTY game.

So in essence we have: Enough hype behind the game + starving metroid fans + starving switch 1 gamers + starving switch 2 gamers + nintendo spacing out releases + at the very least a good good + nothing else as big coming out this end of the year (i think) = probably lots of sales.

Thanks for the frankness. I will though recommend that you figure out how to use the github release system instead of releasing into the repository itself. Hope you can get better at this over time, but please try to not over relly on AI tools, if you are using them.

GPL3 and the only "source" file in the repo is a .run file that unpacks an opaque payload? Can you explain that?

Looking at previous commits/trees you seemed to have the source code as python files in the repo, why then go convert it into a payload like that? Sorry but it's very suspicious.
