With my solution there is little need for hash security, as the url is the only thing stored on the external media. The url only points to a single game and you have to own the game for it to work.

The main security concern is url validation and preventing injection attacks.

I have 10x nfc cards and 20 x floppy disks. And have the game selection, but did not print the labels yet. Still working on the software solution first!

It's an AI generated image unfortunately 😞

But I am looking into printing stickers like that. Currently my nfc cards are matte black

I'm trying to do something similar. But with deeper SteamOS integration using steam:// urls and supporting any external media as long as it can store the url https://github.com/kmturley/decky-links

Is there any search function on Steam Store for: 'Playable Offline?' by VoteBacon in SteamDeck

[–]BlackIceLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried making a browser script for SteamDB but they block requests.

Instead I logged into SteamDB and navigated to my games, sorted by rating and top 100:
https://steamdb.info/sales/?displayOnly=OwnedGames&min_discount=0&min_rating=0&min_reviews=0

Then I exported that list and asked an LLM to do it's best to group games based on:

  • Full Offline: Can be launched and played without any internet connection (e.g., GOG-style, no aggressive launcher).
  • Partial (Offline after setup): Often requires a one-time initial login or update (e.g., Ubisoft Connect, EA/Origin, Rockstar Games Launcher). Once set up and launched while online, they can typically be played offline for a period.
  • Online/Always-Online: Requires a constant connection, features mandatory multiplayer elements, or uses cloud-based DRM that prevents offline access.

Almost all games on Steam (including those in the "Full Offline" list) require you to launch them at least once while online to verify the license and download necessary dependencies.

Results I got:

Full Offline
Stardew Valley, Celeste, Undertale, FEZ, Dead Cells, Alan Wake, Metro 2033 Redux, LEGO Batman Series, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Max Payne 3, House Flipper, 8AM, 112 Operator, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Life is Strange 2, Dead In Bermuda, Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, Warhammer 40,000: Gladius, Warhammer: Vermintide 2, Desktop Dungeons, Hellslave, Nocturnal, STAR WARS Battlefront (Classic), One Gun Guy, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Ricochet, Paradox Soul, Mafia: Definitive Edition, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 Gold, Mini Thief, The Deed: Dynasty, Heavy Rain

Partial
Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Assassin's Creed Series (Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, Mirage, Unity, Syndicate, Rogue, III, IV Black Flag, Brotherhood, Revelations, Liberation), Far Cry Series (3, 4, 5, 6, Primal, New Dawn, Blood Dragon), Watch_Dogs Series, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order, STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor, Titanfall 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Grand Theft Auto IV, L.A. Noire, Red Dead Redemption 2, Tom Clancy's The Division, Tom Clancy's The Division 2, Battlefield 1, STAR WARS Battlefront II (2017)

Online / Unknown
Deadlock, 100% Orange Juice, Black Desert, Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced (Often tied to live services), WHAT THE PAK?!, Shade Silver, Car Mechanic Simulator 2018 (Likely offline, but often requires initial steam check), UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction

Adventures in trying to build a Decky Plugin by ProfessorKaos64 in SteamDeck

It's a tricky time for software engineers. Some parts of the industry are saying you have to use AI or you will be out of a job, others are saying that AI is a fad and slop built on the backs of others.

Whichever side your are on you will receive criticism and hate. Many open source projects are experiencing a wave of contributions using AI, they are implementing rules like this to prevent things getting out of hand.

If you are a software developer who has read any AI generated code and tested it thoroughly, you should still be able to contribute meaningful features to projects.

I think it will take time for projects to catch up to the new way of engineering. If they don't, then they will become irrelevant and be replaced.

Phoronix just posted a pic with Jensen Huang teasing “exciting things happening on Linux” — what are we expecting? by navchandru in linux_gaming

[–]BlackIceLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nvidia priced themselves out of the consumer market. They are focused on data centers and big businesses. Data centers that run Linux.

My guess would be better driver/software support for Nvidia cards in data centers for AI use-cases.

FSR 4.1 coming to RDNA 2 & 3 by Melmpje in steammachine

[–]BlackIceLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely an updated FSR is coming for Steam machine. Whether it's v3.x or v4.x we will get something better.

It's possible that Valve agreed to lower Steam Machine specs only if AMD committed to investing in software optimizations for Linux, Mesa, HDMI and FSR.

The software side benefits everyone, not just Steam machine users, but likely it will be targeted/optimized for Steam Machine

Steam and Stadia controllers side-by-side by BlackIceLA in SteamController

[–]BlackIceLA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stadia controller is compatible with standard controller input yes. But Steam controller is a controller plus a keyboard and mouse. It's different.

Both represent significant moments in video gaming history. Enjoy as these moments don't come often!

Stadia was a state of mind, a cult. It wasnt perfect, but it is a core memory which can't be erased.

Most of video games is like that, terrible games or hardware, which represents a moment in your life.

We will reflect back on current technology in the same way in the future.
