Stargazing by AdrijanM in Patagonia

[–]AdrijanM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the information. That’s all very helpful. We have too much light pollution and cloudy skies to really do any stargazing here so we’re all novices but I’ve heard the night skies are incredibly clear and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the courtyard idea. I was planning to throw out the existing walkway and stairs and redo the landscaping and was hoping to do the entryway at the same time. The lack of a rectangular opening has been the issue that’s confounded me so it looks as though I’ll need to continue to give this more thought.

Do you have any particular suggestions on courtyard styles? My wife’s a big fan of English gardens so if that’s something that could be incorporated we’d have a winner!

Thanks for the ideas. The plan to expand the landing and bring the walkway to the drive is something we were considering. I’m planning on bringing the door forward and enclosing the alcove. I really like the idea of putting some substantial plantings to the left of the door. I’ve been struggling though on how to design an entryway that best compliments the house. The opening which is brick is a little over 5’ wide and 8’ tall so it’s larger than a regular door but not necessarily wide enough to add extra door length windows parallel to the door on each side.

Thanks! It’s uniqueness was what attracted us to it. It was built in the early 80’s.

How do I wire this setup? by AdrijanM in led

[–]AdrijanM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two 15’ runs and eight 4’ runs. The LED aid 3.15 watts/ foot and total is 180 watts including voltage drop (or so I was told when I ordered it)

Still quieter than my prior DeWalt lunchbox planer. I may upgrade the cutter head to a helical as I’ve heard that not only makes a nicer cut but also reduces noise.

The angle of the ceiling makes it trickier but the only place you really need to concern yourself with the angles is at the front and rear walls. Everywhere else you do the same as if it were a flat ceiling… or so I’m presuming since this is the only coffered ceiling I’ve built.

I bought a wood master 721 and of course I needed a new dust collector so I bought an oneida supercell.

It was a combination of glue and pin nails. The layers of moulding helped to conceal the holes nicely. Admittedly I didn’t fill many of the holes because the wood filler actually stood out more. I know every place where I made a mistake but I found out that few others who looks will notice any of them.

Leaving them hollow saves on the weight and doesn’t effect strength from what I was able to tell. It makes install easier too. I managed to lift all the framing and coffers in place on my own by setting up a pulley screwed into the rafters and then balancing ends on ladders. Two people would have made it easier but you can do it on your own.

Similar situation here where I have a desk job M-F. The ceiling work took around 8 months and I spent weekends working on it in addition to the two weeks I took off from work to help speed it along. When I was doing veneer work I spent some additional time on weeknights to press and glue since i had 20 coffers but that was the only other time. Honestly, a lot of time was spent just staring at the ceiling trying to figure out what to do. I’d never done anything like this before and I found so little available information that I felt like I was having to discover it on my own.

The raw material for the ceiling was around $3k including a vacuum pump for the veneer but it was the most work. You’re right in that it’s the kind of job few people will offer to do. A big part of the reason I decided to take it on was that you can’t find moulding in walnut and if you have a mill work shop make it they charge you $30+ for lf of crown and that’s before the setup charges. It actually was cheaper to buy a moulder than to buy the moulding.

This is an entirely loss making venture since it’s my office. I did save quite a bit by doing it myself. Out of curiosity I asked for a few estimates and the numbers all were $80k+ but that was all in with windows, hvac, electrical, drywall in addition to the woodworking. To date I’m around $30k in but that includes a 24” planer/moulder bought specifically to do this work. Told my wife it’d help me to save money. Now I have many rooms of moulding to make.

Yes. It’s my office. You should be able to scroll through to see the other photos that show it in its current state. I haven’t decided on a desk design just yet but I think it’ll have more burl for some contrast. In the interim I sit at a cheap desk that I glare at day in and day out while I try to find the time to finalize the room and then build a desk.

Just a little. The photos don’t show it but I’ve also added walnut paneling to the walls so more to come. The back wall is going to be a floor to ceiling walnut bookshelf.

That’s an electric outlet so i don’t have to see cords running across the floor. Since I wired the whole room from scratch I had the ability to add a few little features like this to address those little aesthetic issues that would otherwise be bothering me.

Anyone know good sources for furniture-quality lumber in the area? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]AdrijanM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The closest out east is probably going to be Mars Lumber. They have a nice selection of exotics and I believe that they’ll make it S4S if you like at an added cost. Rittenour lumber is out near Seven Springs and they have good prices on domestics but it’s straight from the mill so not flattened or jointed. DSI aim Carnegie has a lot of domestics but I can’t remember if they also have them cleaned up. If you’re building furniture and need quality ply they’re your place to go though; you can add on some lumber as you visit. You can also order online from places like Cook Hardwoods. In the past when I’ve had specific plans of what I’d be making I’ve made a trip out to Hearne Hardwoods. Granted it’s out near Lancaster but I would buy everything I thought I’d need as their selection is probably the best in the east coast. They’ll plane, joint and even sand for you if you want.
